Description
Air Lite's Color Me Cotton is a 100% cotton batting on a scrim liner, made only from domestically grown cotton. The cotton is cleaned to remove the seed husks and sticks that cause oil marks and broken needles. It runs well on longarm and short-arm machines, it is easy to hand quilt, and it can be stitched up to 12" apart. It drapes nicely and never feels stiff.
The 122" width covers tops up to about 118" on the narrow side, so a king-size top fits in one piece with no seam. One 40-yard roll makes roughly 12 king cuts, or more queen and full cuts turned across the width. The same batting also comes as a 122" x 20 yd roll.
The scrim liner helps prevent bearding and keeps the batting stable and square, so it resists pucker marks. The batting is uniform, with no thick and thin spots and no loose fibers that migrate or beard. It is completely washable, needs no pre-wash, and shrinkage is generally 1-2% or less.

Compare and choose
- 61", 93" or 122": which width do I need?
- Allow about 4" of extra batting on every side of the top. The 61" roll covers tops up to about 57" on the narrow side (crib, throw and lap quilts). The 93" roll covers up to about 89" (twin, full and a standard queen cut). The 122" roll covers up to about 118", so king tops fit in one piece with no seam. 100% cotton with scrim 93" roll
- 20 yards or 40 yards: which roll should I buy?
- It is the same batting at the same 122" width. A 20-yard roll gives roughly 6 king cuts and a 40-yard roll roughly 12. The 40-yard roll suits busy longarm studios; the 20-yard roll is less to store and easier to handle. 122" x 20 yd roll
- 100% cotton or the poly/cotton blend?
- Both are Color Me Cotton battings with the same scrim liner, 12" stitch distance and 1-2% shrinkage. Choose the 100% cotton when you want no synthetic fiber; the blend adds polyester for a little more resilience. Air Lite does not publish the blend ratio, so if you need a stated 80/20, look at Hobbs Heirloom 80/20. Poly/cotton blend 122" x 40 yd roll
- Air Lite cotton vs Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton with Scrim?
- Both are 100% cotton with a scrim. Hobbs Heirloom has a low loft of about 1/8", shrinks 3-5% and should be quilted within 4", which gives a crinkled, antique look. Air Lite lists 1-2% shrinkage and up to 12" between stitches, so it suits open, widely spaced quilting and a flatter finish. Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton with Scrim 120" roll
- How does it compare with Warm & Natural?
- Warm & Natural is needle-punched cotton on a thin polypropylene scrim and can be quilted up to 10" apart; it comes in 90" and 124" widths. Air Lite cotton allows up to 12" between stitches and lists 1-2% shrinkage. Both suit longarm work; choose by the width you need. Warm & Natural 124" x 30 yd bolt
- Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
- No. It is completely washable and needs no pre-wash. Shrinkage is generally 1-2% or less, so the finished quilt stays close to its original size.
- Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
- No. Batting rolls ship only to the 48 contiguous states. If you are outside that area, pre-cut packages are the better option. Shop packaged batting
