Description

This is the poly/cotton blend from Air Lite's Color Me Cotton line: domestically grown cotton blended with polyester on a scrim liner. The cotton is cleaned to remove the seed husks and sticks that cause oil marks and broken needles. Air Lite does not publish the blend ratio. It runs well on longarm and short-arm machines, it is easy to hand quilt, and it can be stitched up to 12" apart without feeling stiff.

The 93" width covers tops up to about 89" on the narrow side with the usual 4" of extra batting, which handles twin and full quilts and yields a standard 90" x 108" queen cut. One 20-yard roll makes roughly 6 queen cuts. For wider tops and kings, use the 122" roll. The same batting also comes as a 93" x 40 yd roll.

The scrim liner helps prevent bearding and keeps the batting stable and square, so it resists pucker marks. The batting is uniform, with no thick and thin spots and no loose fibers that migrate or beard. It is completely washable, needs no pre-wash, and shrinkage is generally 1-2% or less.

Compare and choose

61", 93" or 122": which width do I need?
Allow about 4" of extra batting on every side of the top. The 61" roll covers tops up to about 57" on the narrow side (crib, throw and lap quilts). The 93" roll covers up to about 89" (twin, full and a standard queen cut). The 122" roll covers up to about 118", so king tops fit in one piece with no seam. Poly/cotton blend with scrim 122" roll
20 yards or 40 yards: which roll should I buy?
It is the same batting at the same 93" width. A 20-yard roll gives roughly 6 queen cuts and a 40-yard roll roughly 13. The 40-yard roll suits busy longarm studios; the 20-yard roll is less to store and easier to handle. 93" x 40 yd roll
100% cotton or the poly/cotton blend?
Both are Color Me Cotton battings with the same scrim liner, 12" stitch distance and 1-2% shrinkage. Choose the 100% cotton when you want no synthetic fiber; the blend adds polyester for a little more resilience. Air Lite does not publish the blend ratio, so if you need a stated 80/20, look at Hobbs Heirloom 80/20. 100% cotton 93" x 20 yd roll
Air Lite poly/cotton vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20: what is the difference?
Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 is a stated 80% cotton / 20% polyester with no scrim, about 1/8" loft and 3-5% shrinkage, and it should be quilted within 4". The Air Lite blend has a scrim liner, lists 1-2% shrinkage and allows up to 12" between stitches, so it suits open, widely spaced quilting. Pick Hobbs for dense quilting and a softly crinkled finish. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 96" roll
What does the scrim liner do?
The scrim is a thin stabilizing layer. It helps prevent bearding, keeps the batting square and stable on the frame, and makes it resistant to pucker marks.
Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
No. It is completely washable and needs no pre-wash. Shrinkage is generally 1-2% or less, so the finished quilt stays close to its original size.
Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Batting rolls ship only to the 48 contiguous states. If you are outside that area, pre-cut packages are the better option. Shop packaged batting
