Description

Bigelow is a wool batting made in Maine from 100% New Zealand wool, with a scrim for stability. It is super washed to eliminate shrinkage, and the scrim lets you quilt up to 8" apart, which is wider spacing than the other wool battings we carry.

This package measures 72" x 94", sized for twin bed quilts and generous throws. Wool is light, warm and breathable, and it shows off quilting with more dimension than cotton. Bigelow is good for hand quilting, machine quilting and crafts.

If you prefer to quilt densely and want the classic lofty wool look in a queen or king size, Hobbs Heirloom Wool is the wool we stock.

Will Bigelow wool batting shrink?
It is super washed to eliminate shrinkage, so you should see little to none, and there is no need to pre-wash.
Is the twin 72" x 94" batt big enough for my quilt?
Plan on batting at least 2" larger than your top on every side, and about 4" on every side if it is going on a longarm frame. This 72" x 94" batt covers finished tops up to about 68" x 90" for domestic quilting, or about 64" x 86" on a longarm. Note the 94" length, a little shorter than the 96" or 108" of many bed-size batts. For a larger top, step up to the 90" x 94". 90" x 94"
Bigelow vs Hobbs Tuscany Wool?
Tuscany Wool is carded and resin-bonded with no scrim, so plan to quilt it more closely (up to 3"-4" depending on the listing). Bigelow's scrim lets you quilt up to 8" apart. Both are warm, light and breathable. Tuscany Wool, similar size
Can I use wool batting for hot pads or microwave bowl cozies?
No. Wool is not microwave safe. For bowl cozies use 100% cotton batting with no scrim or polyester, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
