Description
Hobbs Tuscany Washable Wool is 100% superwashed wool, carded and resin-bonded to retard bearding. The superwash process smooths the scales on the wool fibers, so the batt is pleasant to the touch and less likely to shrink. It is a favorite of both hand and machine quilters because the loft and resilience of wool make quilting designs stand out.
This twin package measures 72" x 96", sized for twin bed quilts, with a little extra length over a standard 72" x 90" twin batt. Wool breathes and lets excess heat move away from the body, while the fine fibers trap air, so it is warm without being heavy and the loft recovers well after folding.
Quilt it up to 3" apart and expect 3-5% shrinkage. Wash finished quilts in cool water by hand and lay them flat to dry; if you use a machine, choose gentle, no spin and cool water, and be careful with front loaders, whose hard spin is rough on quilts. Make a sample first to see how it needles and launders.

- Tuscany Wool vs Hobbs Heirloom Wool: which should I choose?
- Both are superwashed 100% wool from Hobbs that resist bearding and shrink 3-5%. Heirloom Wool is the line we stock in queen and king packages and on a 108" roll, with a loft of about 1/4" to 3/8" and 4" quilting distance. Tuscany Wool gives the same warm, lofty, breathable wool look; check the stitch spacing on the listing you buy (this one: up to 3"). Hobbs Heirloom Wool packages
- How do I wash a quilt made with Tuscany Wool?
- For this listing: hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, or use a gentle, cool, no-spin machine cycle. Avoid hot water and aggressive spin cycles, which are hard on any quilt.
- Is the twin 72" x 96" batt big enough for my quilt?
- Plan on batting at least 2" larger than your top on every side, and about 4" on every side if it is going on a longarm frame. This 72" x 96" batt covers finished tops up to about 68" x 92" for domestic quilting, or about 64" x 88" on a longarm. For a larger top, step up to the queen 96" x 108". queen 96" x 108"
- Is wool batting too warm for summer or warm climates?
- Usually not. Wool breathes and moves excess heat away from the body, so it is comfortable across seasons while still feeling warm in winter. It is also light for its warmth.
- Wool vs cotton batting: what is the practical difference?
- Wool is lighter, loftier and springs back after folding, so quilting stands out and fold lines relax. Cotton is flatter and heavier, with a crinkled antique look after washing. If you want a bit of each, Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool blends 80% cotton with 20% wool. Tuscany Cotton Wool king package
- Can I use wool batting in a microwave bowl cozy or hot pad?
- No. Wool is not microwave safe. For bowl cozies use a 100% cotton batting with no scrim or polyester, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, with 100% cotton fabric and thread. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
