Description
Hobbs Tuscany 100% Washable Wool in a 60" x 60" throw package, for lap quilts, wall hangings and baby quilts up to about 56" x 56". Tuscany Wool is a favorite of hand and machine quilters: the loft and resilience of wool let quilting designs show off to great advantage.
It is made from the finest superwashed wool, carded and resin bonded to retard bearding. The superwash process smooths the scales on the wool fibers, so the batting is pleasant to the touch and less likely to shrink. Wool breathes, letting excess heat move away from the body, and the fine fibers trap air, so this lightweight batt insulates well and keeps its loft.
Hobbs recommends making a sample first to see how it launders and needles, by hand and by machine, before using it on a major project.

- Tuscany Wool vs Hobbs Heirloom Wool: what is the difference?
- Both are 100% superwashed wool from Hobbs and both are bonded. Tuscany is Hobbs' premium line; Heirloom Wool is the line we stock in queen and king packages and on a 108" roll, and it is the more economical choice for everyday bed quilts. For a show quilt or a gift where hand and drape matter most, Tuscany is worth the step up. Hobbs Heirloom Wool packages
- Is Tuscany Wool really washable?
- Yes. The superwash process smooths the wool fibers so they are less likely to shrink or felt. Hobbs recommends hand washing the finished quilt in cool water and drying it flat; if you machine wash, use a gentle cycle, no spin and cool water. Be especially careful with front-loading washers, whose hard spin is rough on quilts. Expect 3-5% shrinkage.
- How close do I need to quilt it?
- Up to 3" apart. That is closer than most cotton battings, so plan an allover design or custom quilting with no large open areas.
- Is a 60" x 60" throw big enough for my project?
- Allowing 2" around the top, it covers quilts up to about 56" x 56": most lap, baby and wall quilts. For a twin bed, use the 72" x 96" twin package. Tuscany Wool 72" x 96" twin
- Why choose wool batting at all?
- Wool is light for its warmth, breathes so it is comfortable in warm rooms, resists creasing when folded and has loft that makes quilting stand out. It is the batting many show quilters choose for feathers and custom work.
- Wool vs cotton/wool blend?
- All wool has the most loft and the lightest weight. Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool is 80% cotton and 20% wool: flatter and more stable, can be quilted up to 4" apart, and sits between cotton and wool in price. Tuscany Cotton Wool 60" x 60"
