60" roll or 20" bolt?

Buy the 60" roll when you cut pieces wider than 20": upholstery panels, large totes, box lids, ironing board covers, or many small pieces nested across the width. If everything you make fits in a 20" width, the 20" bolt is the cheaper way to buy the same foam.

FF76 vs FF77: what does the tricot covering do?

FF77 is the same foam with a thin polyester tricot fused to both faces. The tricot keeps the foam from grabbing the presser foot, gives quilting stitches something to hold and makes the panel easier to handle and cut. FF76 skips the covering, which lowers the cost; it works well where the foam is sandwiched and quilted anyway, such as bag bodies, box sides and padding.

Uncovered Flex-Foam vs ByAnnie Soft and Stable?

Soft and Stable is a tricot-covered polyester foam, closer to FF77 than to FF76. It is easier to sew on a domestic machine and is the product most bag patterns are written for. FF76 is bare foam: cheaper, a little grabbier under the foot, and best when it will be quilted or enclosed. If you want the smoothest handling, buy Soft and Stable or FF77; if you want the most foam for the money, buy FF76.

Can I fuse FF76, or iron over it?

It has no adhesive, so pin, baste or quilt it in place. Keep the iron off bare foam: press from the fabric side with the foam covered, and let the panel cool before handling. If you want an iron-on foam, choose FF78F1 (one side) or FF79F2 (both sides).

Is it safe to sew through on a home machine?

Yes. Pellon rates it sewing-machine safe. Use a walking foot or a slightly longer stitch, and a size 90/14 needle on thick bag seams, and it feeds without trouble. Trim the foam out of seam allowances to reduce bulk at corners.

Can I use it for microwave bowl cozies or hot pads?

No. Polyurethane foam is not microwave safe and does not insulate against heat the way cotton batting does. For bowl cozies and hot pads use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 100% cotton batting with cotton fabric and thread.

Pellon FF76 Basic Uncovered Flex-Foam is the plain version of Pellon's foam stabilizer: the same flexible polyurethane foam as the Flex-Foam FF77, FF78F1 and FF79F2 bolts, but with no tricot covering and no fusible. That makes it the lowest-cost way to put foam structure into tote bags, storage boxes, wallet clutches, fabric bowls and children's soft books, and it is sewing-machine safe. It also works as extra padding in upholstery projects and ironing board covers. The full-width 60" roll covers large bags, upholstery panels and production runs without piecing, and 10 yards is enough for a studio season of structured projects.

Because the foam is uncovered it is a sew-in: baste or quilt it between the outer fabric and the lining, or use it in addition to another stabilizer. If you want the tricot cover that lets foam glide under the presser foot and take quilting cleanly, step up to FF77 sew-in, FF78F1 one-sided fusible or FF79F2 two-sided fusible.
