Description

Pellon 80/20 Cotton/Polyester with Scrim is a low-loft blend batting for quilters who want the flat, traditional look of cotton with a little more strength and less shrinkage than pure cotton. The 120" x 120" king package covers a king bed top in one piece. No 96" roll will do that without seaming two pieces together, which is the main reason to buy this size rather than a bolt.

The batting is needle-punched through a soft scrim, which is what lets it be quilted up to 10" apart without bunching or bearding. Loft is 1/16", so quilting shows as texture rather than puff, and the blend shrinks 3-5% in the first wash for the gently crinkled finish most bed quilts are after. It runs through a longarm, a domestic machine or a hand-quilting hoop without complaint.

Pellon 80/20 vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20: what is the difference?
Both are 80% cotton, 20% polyester, needle-punched, and shrink 3-5%. Pellon adds a scrim, which stabilizes the batt and lets you quilt up to 10" apart; Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 has no scrim, is a touch loftier at about 1/8", and should be quilted within 4". Pick Pellon for wide, simple quilting or an edge-to-edge pantograph; pick Hobbs when you want a slightly softer, more drapey hand. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 packages
80/20 blend or Pellon 100% cotton with scrim?
They look and quilt almost the same: both are 1/16" loft, scrim-stabilized, and good to 10" between lines. The 20% polyester in the blend adds resilience, resists creasing in the package and holds up a little better over years of washing. The 100% cotton is the choice if you want an all-natural fiber or plan to do heavy hand quilting. Pellon Natural Cotton with Scrim packages
Do I really need the king package, or can I piece two smaller batts?
You can join two pieces with batting tape or a zigzag seam, but a seam in batting can show as a ridge in a low-loft quilt. The 120" x 120" package covers a king top in one piece with no join, which is why we recommend it for anything wider than 86".
Will this fit a California king?
A California king mattress is narrower and longer than a standard king, about 72" x 84", so a quilt top for one is typically around 104" x 114". The 120" x 120" batting covers that with margin on all sides.
Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
No. Use it straight from the package and expect 3-5% shrinkage in the first wash, which pulls the quilt into the soft, crinkled finish most quilters want. If you need the quilt to stay flat and square, for a wall hanging for instance, wash and dry the finished piece gently or choose a polyester batting that does not shrink.
Can I use this for a microwave bowl cozy or hot pad?
No. The polyester content and the scrim make it unsafe in a microwave. For bowl cozies and potato bags use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is the only batting we sell that is made for microwave use. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
