Description

Pellon 80/20 Cotton/Polyester with Scrim is a low-loft blend batting for quilters who want the flat, traditional look of cotton with a little more strength and less shrinkage than pure cotton. This 90" x 6 yard bolt is the small-studio format: 216" of 90"-wide batting, enough for two queen tops or three twins, at a lower cost per yard than the pre-cut packages. Cut what each quilt needs and store the rest on the bolt.

The batting is needle-punched through a soft scrim, which is what lets it be quilted up to 10" apart without bunching or bearding. Loft is 1/16", so quilting shows as texture rather than puff, and the blend shrinks 3-5% in the first wash for a gently crinkled finish. It runs through a longarm, a domestic machine or a hand-quilting hoop without complaint.

Rolls and bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states.

81" x 96"
~3 twin cuts
72" x 90" (90" across the width)
~3 throw cuts

Cut lengths run along the 216" bolt; width is fixed at 90". Twin and throw cuts are turned so their longer side runs across the width. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.

Compare and choose

How many quilts will a 6 yard bolt make?
The bolt is 90" wide and 216" long. Cutting along the length you get two queen cuts (90" x 108"), two full cuts (81" x 96"), three twin cuts with the 90" side across the bolt, or three throw cuts. King tops need 120" of width and do not fit; buy the king package for those. Pellon 80/20 king package
Bolt or pre-cut package?
One quilt: buy the package in the right size. Two or more: the bolt costs less per yard and lets you cut odd sizes, such as a long table runner or a twin XL. The trade-off is that bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states, while packages ship anywhere. Pellon 80/20 queen package
Pellon 80/20 vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 on a roll: which should I buy?
Both are 80/20 cotton-poly, needle-punched, 3-5% shrinkage. Pellon has a scrim, which stabilizes it on a longarm frame and allows quilting up to 10" apart; Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 has no scrim, is a little loftier, and should be quilted within 4". Hobbs comes on 96" and 120" rolls of 30 yards, so for a longarm business it is the bigger commitment; the Pellon 6 yard bolt is the easier starting point. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 96" roll
Is 90" wide enough for a queen quilt?
For most queen tops, yes. Batting should be at least 4" wider than the top on each side, so a 90" bolt handles tops up to about 82" to 86" across with the 108" length running along the bolt. Wider queens and all kings need the 120" x 120" king package. Pellon 80/20 king package
Do I need to pre-wash this batting?
No. Use it from the bolt and expect 3-5% shrinkage in the first wash, which gives the soft, crinkled finish most bed quilts are after. The scrim keeps it from distorting in the washer.
