Description

Pellon Dark Blend with Scrim is a black, low-loft polyester batting for quilts with black or deep-colored fabrics, where a natural batting would gray the top and any bearding would show as white flecks. The 90" x 6 yard bolt is 216" of 90"-wide batting: two queen cuts or three twins, at a lower cost per yard than the queen package, for quilters who make dark quilts regularly.

The batt is 75% polyester needle-punched through a 25% polypropylene scrim, so it has the same 1/16" loft and 10" stitch allowance as the Pellon cotton battings but with 0% shrinkage: the finished quilt stays flat and square after washing. And because the batt itself is black, any fiber that works up through the needle holes is invisible on dark fabric. Hand or machine wash, or dry clean.

Rolls and bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states.

What one 90" x 6 yd bolt makes

~2 queen cuts

81" x 96"
~3 twin cuts
72" x 90" (90" across the width)
~3 throw cuts

Cut lengths run along the 216" bolt; width is fixed at 90". Twin and throw cuts are turned so their longer side runs across the width. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.

Compare and choose

Why use black batting?
Under black or deep-colored fabric, a natural or white batting can show through as a gray haze and any fiber that bearded through the needle holes shows as white specks. Black batting makes the quilt read as a true dark and hides bearding. It is the standard choice for black-background and Halloween quilts and for dark t-shirt quilts.
Pellon Dark Blend vs Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20?
Hobbs Heirloom Black is an 80% cotton, 20% polyester blend with no scrim, about 1/8" loft, 3-5% shrinkage and a 4" stitch allowance. Pellon Dark Blend is polyester over a scrim: thinner, no shrinkage, quilting to 10" apart. Choose Hobbs for a cotton feel and a crinkled finish; choose Pellon for a flat, stable, wash-and-stay-square quilt or an open longarm design. Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20 package
How many quilts will the bolt make?
Two queen cuts (90" x 108"), two full cuts, three twin cuts with the 90" side across the bolt, or three throws. It is 90" wide, so a king top needs two pieces joined along the length.
Bolt or the queen package?
One dark quilt: buy the 90" x 108" package, which ships anywhere. Two or more: the bolt costs less per yard. Bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states. Pellon Dark Blend queen package
Pellon Dark Blend vs Quilters Dream Select Black Poly?
Both are black polyester with no shrinkage. Quilters Dream Select Black has no scrim and a softer, loftier hand; Pellon Dark Blend is thinner with a scrim that lets you quilt up to 10" apart and keeps the batt stable on a frame. Pellon is the practical choice for everyday and longarm work; Quilters Dream for a softer drape. Quilters Dream Select Black Poly package
Does it shrink or need pre-washing?
No shrinkage and no pre-washing. Polyester does not shrink, so the quilt stays the size you made it. If you want the crinkled, antique look, this is not the batting for it; use a cotton or 80/20 instead.
