If the top is mostly black or very dark, yes. Light batting fibers migrate through needle holes and open weaves and show as white specks on dark fabric, and a light batting can gray down black fabric slightly. For mixed-value quilts, natural 80/20 is fine.

The dye is color-fast and does not bleed, but black batting can gray very light fabrics from behind. Use it only when the top is predominantly dark.

Pick a batting at least 4" wider than the shorter side of your quilt top. A 108" roll covers queen tops (about 90" x 108") with room to spare and oversized queens, but a true king (108" to 120" wide) does not fit in one piece; for king, use a 120" roll.

Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20 is made with color-fast dyed cotton so dark quilts stay dark: no light fibers bearding through black fabric, no pale shadow behind navy or charcoal. The 108" x 30 yard roll covers queen and oversized-queen tops in one piece.

Otherwise it is standard Heirloom Premium 80/20: needle-punched and bonded, soft with a little loft, quilting up to 4" apart with 3-5% first-wash shrinkage.
