Description

Quilters Dream Select Black Poly is a true deep black batting for dark quilts. Under black, navy, brown, burgundy or forest-green fabric, a white batting can beard through the weave and show as pale fuzz at the needle holes; a black batting disappears and makes dark fabrics look richer. Select is the mid loft and the most popular in the Dream Poly line, soft enough for hand quilting and stable enough for the longarm. This package is pre-cut in eight sizes from Craft to King.

Dream Poly is not an ordinary polyester. It is made from very fine denier microfibers, over 60 million fibers per pound against about 5 million in a typical poly batt, which is what gives it a soft hand, real drape and breathability. The fibers are blended, carded, crosslapped and needle-punched with no scrim, resin or glue, so needles glide through it. It resists bunching and shifting, can be quilted up to 12" apart, does not shrink, and resists holding a crease, which makes it a good choice for quilts that get folded, packed and shipped. Machine wash and dry the finished quilt, or dry clean.

Black Dream Poly is made only in the Select loft. The same batting is on 60", 93" and 120" rolls for longarm studios. For a dark quilt in a cotton blend, see the Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20.

Compare and choose

Do I really need black batting for a dark quilt?
If the top or backing is mostly black or very dark, yes. Polyester and cotton fibers migrate through fabric over time and at needle holes; with white batting under black fabric that shows as a grey haze or pale specks. Black batting makes the migration invisible. Under medium or mixed-color tops, white batting is fine.
Quilters Dream Black Poly vs Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20: which black batting?
Dream Black Poly is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, 12" quilting distance, very soft drape, and black all the way through. Hobbs Black 80/20 is a cotton-poly blend: a more traditional cotton hand, 3-5% shrinkage for the crinkled look, and 4" quilting distance. Choose Dream Poly for a flat modern finish and easy care; choose Hobbs for a cotton feel. Hobbs Heirloom Black 80/20 package
Request, Select or Deluxe: which Dream Poly loft?
Same microfiber polyester, three thicknesses. Request is the thinnest, made for hand quilters and lightweight summer quilts. Select is the mid loft and the most popular: the all-purpose choice for bed quilts, modern quilts and wearables. Deluxe is the heaviest, adding warmth, weight and stitch definition for machine-quilted projects. All three quilt up to 12" apart and have no scrim.
Will black batting shadow through light fabric?
Yes, so do not use it under white or pastel fabric. If a dark quilt has light sections, choose based on the dominant color; a black batting under a few light patches is usually less visible than white batting bearding through black.
Will Dream Poly shrink or crinkle when washed?
No. Dream Poly has zero shrinkage, so the quilt keeps the flat, smooth look it had on the frame. If you want the antique crinkle, pair it with unwashed cotton fabric so the fabric shrinks instead, or choose a cotton batting. Do not pre-wash the batting.
Can I use polyester batting for microwave bowl cozies or hot pads?
No. Polyester melts and can scorch in a microwave. Use 100% cotton batting with no scrim, such as Quilters Dream Cotton, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, with cotton fabric and cotton thread. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
