Description
Pellon soy/cotton batting with scrim in a 34" x 45" craft package is a thin, soft, natural-color batting for wall hangings, table runners, placemats, pillows and small hand-quilted pieces. If you have never tried a soy blend, this is the inexpensive way to feel how it needles. For a bed quilt see the 90" x 108" queen package.
The blend is thin, 1/16" loft, and very easy to needle by hand. Soy fiber breathes, absorbs moisture, resists creasing and dries fast, and the scrim lets you quilt up to 10" apart without the batting shifting. Shrinkage is only 0-3%, so pre-washing is unnecessary and the finished quilt stays flat rather than crinkling. Washable by hand or machine and dry cleanable.

Compare and choose
- Is the craft size big enough for a baby quilt?
- Not usually; most crib quilts are 36" x 52" or larger. Pellon does not package the soy blend in crib size, so for a baby quilt buy the 90" x 6 yd bolt and cut two crib pieces from it, or use the queen package and trim. Pellon Soy/Cotton 90" x 6 yd bolt
- Is this a good batting for hand quilting?
- Yes. The soy/cotton blend is thin and needles easily, which is why Pellon positions it for hand quilters. You can space hand stitching up to 10" apart, though most hand quilters work much closer than that.
- Soy/cotton vs Pellon natural cotton with scrim: what is the difference?
- Both are 1/16" loft battings on a polypropylene scrim that quilt up to 10" apart. The soy blend is noticeably softer and drapes more, needles more easily by hand, and shrinks only 0-3% versus 3-5% for the cotton. Cotton gives the classic crinkled look after washing; the soy blend stays smoother and flatter. Pellon Natural Cotton with Scrim queen package
- Soy/cotton or bamboo/cotton: which blend should I choose?
- Both are Pellon plant-fiber blends with a soft hand and low loft. Bamboo/cotton is silkier with a bit more drape; the soy blend is slightly thinner, needles very easily by hand and has the lower shrinkage. If you hand quilt, start with soy; if you want the softest drape for a machine-quilted throw, bamboo. Pellon Bamboo/Cotton queen package
- Do I need to pre-wash soy/cotton batting?
- No. Shrinkage is 0-3%, so the quilt keeps its size and finish after the first wash. If you want a crinkled, antique look, choose a cotton batting with 3-5% shrinkage instead.
- Can I use soy/cotton batting for microwave bowl cozies?
- No. The polypropylene scrim is a synthetic and can melt, and soy fiber is not rated for the microwave. Use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% natural cotton with no scrim, with cotton thread. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 45" x 1 yd package
