Quilters Select Blend vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20: what is the difference?

Both are needle-punched cotton/polyester blends that shrink about 3-5%. Quilters Select Blend is built on a light scrim, so it can be quilted up to 8-1/2" apart and resists stretching under heavy quilting or embellishment. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 has no scrim, runs about 1/8" loft, and should be quilted within 4". Choose the Select Blend for open, wide-spaced designs; choose Hobbs for a softer, more drapey hand.

Quilters Select Blend or Linda's Deluxe queen package?

Linda's Deluxe is a 60% cotton, 40% polyester blend made for us by Hobbs, with more loft than most blends, sold as a queen 3-yard package. Quilters Select Blend is flatter, has a light scrim and can be quilted up to 8-1/2" apart. Choose by the finish you want: puffier quilting with Linda's Deluxe, flatter with Select Blend.

Is 93" x 116" enough for a queen quilt?

A standard 90" x 108" queen top fits with about 1-1/2" to spare on each side and 4" on each end. That works for hand quilting and domestic machines; if you load a longarm and want 4" or more on every side, use the 122" x 122" king cut.

Do I need to pre-wash Quilters Select Blend?

The manufacturer recommends it, by hand only: soak 15 minutes in cool water with a mild detergent, roll in a dry towel to remove water, and dry flat. Never machine wash or dry the batting before quilting. If you skip pre-washing, wash the finished quilt on a delicate cycle in cool water and dry it flat; expect up to 3-5% shrinkage and a slightly wrinkled, antique look.

How far apart can I quilt it?

Up to 8-1/2" apart by machine or by hand. The light scrim is what holds the batting together over that distance and keeps it from stretching or shifting during quilting and embellishing.

Quilters Select Blend is a soft, durable cotton/polyester batting for machine and hand quilters who want to quilt and embellish without the batting distorting. The fibers are needle-punched onto a light scrim, which controls stretching and movement under the needle, and the smooth loft gives little resistance as you stitch.

This queen cut measures 93" x 116", sized for queen tops up to about 89" x 112" with a margin on each side. Longarm quilters who want 4" or more extra on every side for loading should size up one cut.

Care matters with this batting: the manufacturer recommends a test piece first and, if you pre-wash, hand washing only. Expect up to 3-5% shrinkage from the natural fibers.
