Description
Sulky Stiffy is a crisp, firm tear-away stabilizer that gives great stability with effortless removal. It is a medium-weight, denser tear-away for satin stitching, monogramming, appliqué and embroidery, where it prevents tunneling, distorted stitches and puckered fabric.
Professional embroiderers use one, two or three layers as a backing to stabilize heavier fabrics. The 8" x 11 yard roll suits 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" hoops. For lighter work, Sulky Tear Easy is the softer tear-away; for knits, use a cut-away instead.

Cuts are the hoop size plus about 2" each way, laid along the 11 yd length at the 8" width and turned where that fits more. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.

- Tear Easy is the lighter, softer tear-away for light designs on light woven fabrics. Stiffy is denser and crisper, for satin stitches, monograms and heavier fabrics where you need more support. If your satin columns tunnel or pucker, switch to Stiffy. Sulky Tear Easy 8"
- How many layers should I use?
- One layer handles most designs on medium wovens. Professional embroiderers add a second or third layer under dense designs and heavier fabrics. Tear each layer away separately to keep stress off the stitches.
- Can I use Stiffy on knits?
- No. A tear-away is removed after stitching, so a knit has nothing holding the design through wear. Use a cut-away for t-shirts, polos and sweatshirts.
- How do I remove it cleanly?
- Hold the stitches flat with one thumb and tear the stabilizer toward the design, not away from it. On satin columns, tear one side at a time.
- What is the equivalent from other brands?
