Description

This is a 1.5" wide fusible seam tape for joining leftover pieces of batting into one usable piece, so the ends of rolls and the offcuts from big quilts stop going in the bin. Butt two batting edges together, lay the tape over the join, press, and you have a flat, continuous batt with no overlap ridge and no hand stitching. The 10-yard package is the right amount for occasional use; if you join batting every week, the 2" x 30 yard Bosal roll is the better buy.

The tape is a lightweight, non-woven fusible with adhesive on one side only. It is thin enough to quilt through by hand or machine without gumming the needle, and it works on cotton, blend, polyester, bamboo and wool batting alike. Read the instructions on the back of the package before you start, and test on a scrap, because iron temperature matters more than pressure.

Part 428-15 in the Bosal batting tape family. After fusing, care for the quilt the way the fabric and batting call for; the tape itself has no special washing needs.

Compare and choose

1.5" x 10 yd or the 2" x 30 yd Bosal roll: which should I buy?
Both do the same job. The 1.5" width is plenty for a straight, butted join on a bed quilt, and 10 yards covers three or four long seams. The 2" roll gives more forgiveness on a wavy cut and three times the length, so it is the better value for anyone who joins batting regularly. Bosal batting seam tape 2" x 30 yd
How do I join two pieces of batting with seam tape?
Overlap the two pieces by a couple of inches, cut a gentle wavy line through both layers at once, and discard the trimmings so the edges butt together with no gap and no overlap. Center the tape over the seam, glue side down, cover with a pressing cloth, and press with a dry iron for several seconds at a time, moving along the seam. Let it cool before you handle it.
Will the tape show through or feel stiff in the quilt?
No. It is a sheer, lightweight non-woven, so once the quilt is quilted and washed you cannot feel the join. Keep the butted edges tight so there is no gap for the tape to bridge, and the seam disappears.
Does seam tape work on polyester or wool batting?
Yes, on any fiber. Use a lower iron setting on polyester and wool and test on a scrap first, since synthetic battings flatten or melt under a cotton-hot iron. Cotton and 80/20 battings take a wool or cotton setting without trouble.
Seam tape vs Heat Press Batting Together: what is the difference?
Heat Press Batting Together is a woven cloth tape with a soft fuse that stretches, so it is a little more forgiving on bias joins and on lofty battings. This Bosal tape is a lighter non-woven. Either one makes a flat join that quilts through cleanly; we stock Heat Press in white and black for dark quilts. Heat Press Batting Together tape, white
Can I quilt through the seam on a longarm?
Yes. The tape is thin and the adhesive sets hard, so the needle passes through without gumming. Run the seam across the frame rather than along the rails if you can, so the join is loaded straight.
