Description
Bosal Batting Tape is a 2" wide fusible seam tape on a 30-yard roll, made for joining batting pieces into a bigger batt. Lay the tape over a butted seam, press with an iron, and the two pieces become one smooth surface with no ridge and no bulk. Longarmers use it to turn roll ends into usable throw and crib batts; everyone else uses it to widen a package batt that came up a few inches short.
The tape is a lightweight fusible that keeps the join flat and stable, so it quilts through on a longarm, a domestic machine or by hand without catching the needle. The 2" width gives you a full inch of bond on each side of the seam, which is more forgiving than 1.5" tape when the cut is a little wavy. Thirty yards is enough for a season of joins, and it is the roll we recommend for anyone who pieces batting regularly.
Ideal for quilts, wall hangings and any project where you want to use up leftover batting. Test on a scrap first and use the iron setting your batting can take.

- 2" x 30 yd or 1.5" x 10 yd: which batting tape do I need?
- For an occasional join on one quilt, the 1.5" x 10 yard package is enough. If you piece batting often, or your cuts tend to wander, the 2" width is more forgiving and the 30-yard roll works out far cheaper per seam. Most longarm studios keep the 2" roll on the shelf. - How do I join batting so the seam does not show?
- Overlap the two pieces by a few inches, cut a wavy line through both at once, and remove the scraps so the edges butt together with no gap. Center the tape over the seam, glue side down, cover with a pressing cloth, and press and hold a few seconds at a time along the seam with a dry iron. Keep the cut edges at least 1/2" inside the tape edges. Let it cool before moving it.
- What iron setting should I use?
- Medium or wool with no steam is the safe starting point. Cotton and 80/20 battings tolerate more heat; polyester, bamboo and wool need a lower setting and a pressing cloth so the batting does not flatten or melt. Always test on a scrap of the batting you are joining.
- Can I quilt through the taped seam by hand?
- Yes. The tape is light enough that hand quilters barely notice it, and it does not gum up a needle. Machine and longarm quilting pass straight through it.
- Bosal tape vs Heat Press Batting Together: what is the difference?
- Heat Press is a woven cloth tape with a stretchy fuse, which suits lofty or bias-cut joins and comes in black for dark quilts. Bosal is a lighter non-woven that keeps the join as flat as possible. - Does the join survive washing?
- Yes. Once fused and quilted through, the seam is permanent. Wash and dry the finished quilt according to the batting and fabric care instructions.
