Description
HeatnBond EZ-Seam is a sheer, lightweight iron-on tape for joining leftover pieces of batting into one usable piece, and for adding a strip of stability anywhere a seam needs it. Butt two cut edges of batting together, lay the tape over the join, press, and the pieces become one flat batt with no lump, no overlap and no hand stitching. It turns the scraps left from a roll into throw and crib batts.
The tape is 100% polyester, 1.5" wide and 15 yards (540") long, with permanent adhesive on one side. It is sheer enough not to show through fabric, it will not shift, bunch, stretch or separate, and it quilts by hand or machine without gumming up the needle. Once fused it is machine washable, dryable and dry cleanable.
To join batting: preheat the iron to the wool setting with no steam, butt the edges, center the tape textured (fusible) side down along the seam, cover with a light dry pressing cloth, and press with medium pressure for 10-15 seconds, overlapping each press until the whole seam is bonded. Let it cool; if any area needs more, press another 5 seconds. Pre-test on a scrap of your batting first.

- EZ-Seam vs Bosal batting seam tape: which should I buy?
- Both are iron-on tapes that bridge butted batting edges. EZ-Seam is 1.5" wide and 15 yards, a sheer, very light polyester that is a good match for low-loft cotton and blend battings where you do not want to feel the join. Bosal's tape is 2" wide and 30 yards, so you get a wider bond and more length per roll. Either works on cotton, blend and polyester batting; test the iron setting on a scrap first. - Will the join show or feel stiff in the finished quilt?
- No. The tape is sheer and smooth, so there is no ridge, and because the batting edges are butted rather than overlapped there is no double thickness. You quilt straight across the join as if it were one piece. Keep stitching lines running through the taped area so the seam is secured by the quilting as well.
- How much batting can I join with one 15-yard roll?
- The roll is 540" of tape. That is five full-length queen seams of 108", seven twin-width seams of 72", or nine throw-width seams of 60". A typical scrap join on a crib or throw batt uses 2 to 3 yards.
- Does it work on polyester and wool batting, or only cotton?
- It is designed for batting in general and the iron is set to wool, which is below the cotton setting, so it is gentle enough for polyester and wool. Therm O Web still says to pre-test on your materials: some loft battings compress a little under the iron, so check a scrap before you tape a whole seam.
- Can I use fusible web like Wonder-Under instead?
- Fusible web is adhesive on both faces and is meant to bond two layers together, so on a butted batting seam it has nothing to grip and leaves sticky residue for the needle. - Steam or no steam?
- No steam, and use a dry pressing cloth. Steam interferes with the adhesive and can leave the tape only partly bonded. Press and hold rather than sliding the iron, and let the seam cool completely before moving the batting.
