Description

This is the Throw Plus package of Bliss 80/20 Cotton Poly Batting by Therm O Web: one pre-cut piece, 60" x 72". Allow at least 2" of batting beyond every edge of the top, so this size covers rectangular throws up to about 56" x 68", and it also works for couch quilts and oversize baby quilts. If your top is larger than that, step up to the Twin 72" x 96".

Bliss 80/20 Cotton Poly blends 80% USA-grown long-staple cotton with 20% polyester in a 4 oz per square yard batting with no scrim. The polyester adds a bit of loft and spring over pure cotton, so quilting lines show more and the batting resists bearding and fiber separation, while the cotton keeps it breathable and lightweight for year-round quilts. It handles easily, which is why we point beginners and anyone basting on a floor or table toward it.

Quilt it up to 8" apart by hand or machine. Therm O Web recommends pre-washing by hand; shrinkage is under 5%, and the finished quilt washes cold on delicate and tumbles dry low. It resists creasing and washes well. If you want pure cotton with a flatter, more traditional hand, see the Bliss 100% Cotton in this size.

Compare and choose

Is the Throw Plus 60" x 72" package big enough for my quilt?
Allow at least 2" of batting past every edge of the top, so this piece covers rectangular throws up to about 56" x 68". Measure the finished top before you buy. If it runs larger, step up to the Twin 72" x 96"; the extra batting trims off easily and the offcuts make hot pads, placemats and mug rugs. Twin 72" x 96"
Throw Plus 60" x 72" or Throw 60" x 60"?
Same batting, 12" longer. Pick Throw Plus for the usual rectangular couch throw, which runs about 56" x 68" finished. If your quilt is square and 56" or smaller, the Throw 60" x 60" is enough. Throw 60" x 60"
Bliss 80/20 vs Bliss 100% Cotton: which should I buy?
Same 4 oz weight, no scrim, 8" quilting distance and under 5% shrinkage. The 80/20 has more loft and spring, so quilting shows more, and the polyester resists bearding and makes it easier to handle while basting. The 100% Cotton is flatter, all-natural, cooler and gives the crinkled antique finish. Choose the 80/20 for everyday bed quilts and beginners; choose the cotton for heirloom and hand-quilted projects. Bliss 100% Cotton Throw Plus 60" x 72"
Bliss 80/20 vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20: what is the difference?
Both are 80% cotton, 20% polyester needle-punched blends with no scrim. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 is lightly resin-bonded, sits around 1/8" loft and should be quilted within 4". Bliss 80/20 is a 4 oz batting that quilts up to 8" apart, which gives you more freedom with simple or widely spaced designs. Hobbs is the longarm studio standard we stock in rolls and boards; Bliss is a strong pre-cut alternative, especially for wider stitch spacing. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 packages
Is 80/20 batting right for a t-shirt quilt or a baby quilt?
Yes to both. The blend is lightweight, washes well, resists creasing and holds up to repeated laundering, which is what t-shirt quilts and baby quilts get. Do not use it for microwave projects such as bowl cozies or hot pads; the 20% polyester rules that out. Use the Bliss 100% Cotton or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap for those. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
Do I need to pre-wash Bliss batting?
Therm O Web recommends pre-washing by hand, and most of our customers who want a flat, modern finish do. Shrinkage is under 5% either way. If you skip it, wash the finished quilt in cold water on the delicate cycle and tumble dry low; the slight shrink gives the soft, crinkled look.
How far apart can I quilt it, and does it work for hand quilting?
Up to 8" apart, by hand or machine. There is no scrim, so hand quilters find it easy to needle; keep the 8" spacing to stop the batting shifting in the wash.
