Linda's Deluxe vs Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 package: what is the difference?

Both are cotton-poly blends made by Hobbs, needle-punched, 3-5% shrinkage, quilted within 4". Heirloom 80/20 is about 1/8" loft with a flat traditional look. Deluxe is 60/40 with about 1/4" loft, so quilting shows in more relief and the quilt feels fuller and more resilient. Both come in a twin size; Hobbs' twin is 72" x 90", Deluxe's is 72" x 96".

Is this a good batting for a lap quilt or throw?

Yes. The 1/4" loft gives a throw some body and warmth without the weight of wool or the puff of high-loft poly, and the 72" x 96" piece leaves plenty to trim for a 60" x 72" throw. It washes and dries well for everyday use.

Bliss 80/20 is a soft, needle-punched 80/20 in a 72" x 96" twin package, similar in loft to Hobbs Heirloom. Deluxe is 60/40 and loftier at about 1/4". If you want a flat, classic blend at the lower price, Bliss; if you want more loft and definition, Deluxe.

Is it right for a white or pastel quilt?

Test first. Deluxe is a natural cream and Hobbs rates it good, not excellent, under light fabrics; it can shadow faintly through white. For a white or pastel top, Hobbs Bleached 80/20 is cut by the yard at 108" wide; 2 yards covers a twin.

Do I need to pre-wash it?

No. Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing. Expect 3-5% shrinkage on the first wash of the finished quilt, which gives the soft crinkle most quilters want.

Linda's Deluxe Cotton/Poly, our house batting made for us by Hobbs, pre-cut as a 2-yard twin package: 72" x 96" in one piece. That covers a twin top (about 66" x 86" after margins), a generous lap quilt or a large throw, and it is the right size for most wheelchair and nap quilts. It is the simplest way to buy Deluxe for a single smaller quilt, and packages ship to every address, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Deluxe is a 60% cotton, 40% polyester blend with a fuller loft than a standard 80/20, about 1/4". The cotton gives a soft, warm, breathable layer; the polyester adds strength, shape retention and crisp stitch definition, which is why it suits machine and longarm quilting so well. It is needle-punched, so it does not shift or bunch under the needle, and the loft is consistent across the whole piece. The natural cream color is best under medium and dark fabrics; test under very light tops. Machine washable and dryable; Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing.
