Bliss for Jelly Rolls is Therm O Web's 100% cotton batting cut into a continuous 2.25" strip and wound on a 25-yard roll. It is made for projects built from 2.5" jelly roll fabric strips: jelly roll rugs, rope bowls and baskets, bag straps, placemats and trivets. You wrap the fabric strip around the batting strip, press, and stitch, with no cutting batting into strips yourself.
The 2.25" width sits just inside a standard 2.5" jelly roll strip, so the fabric edges fold over the batting with less bulk at the seam; it is the width many jelly roll rug makers prefer. If you want the strip filled edge to edge for a plumper, firmer rope, use the 2.5" width. A 25-yard roll is 900" of strip, about half of a 40-strip jelly roll. That covers a small rug, a set of coasters or bowls, or bag straps; for a full-size jelly roll rug go to the 50-yard roll.
The batting itself is pure needle-punched USA-grown long-staple cotton with no scrim, resin, bleach or harsh chemicals, 4 oz per square yard, a mid-loft weight that is easy to hand or machine quilt. It stays stable through heavy use and washes into the traditional crinkled cotton texture. Therm O Web recommends pre-washing by hand; shrinkage is under 5%. If you do not pre-wash, wash the finished project cold on the delicate cycle and tumble dry low. Made in the USA.

- 2.25" or 2.5" batting strips: which width do I need?
- Both are made for 2.5" jelly roll fabric strips. The 2.5" batting fills the strip edge to edge, giving a full, firm rope that is popular for rugs that need to lie heavy and flat. The 2.25" batting sits slightly inside the fabric so the edges fold over it with less bulk, which makes the strip easier to press and zigzag together. - A 25-yard roll is 900" of strip, roughly 21 lengths of 42", which is about half of a 40-strip jelly roll. - Bliss jelly roll batting vs Pellon cotton with scrim strips: what is the difference?
- Pellon's jelly roll strips are cotton batting with a scrim, a thin stabilizing layer that keeps the strip from stretching as you wrap and sew it. Bliss is pure needle-punched cotton with no scrim, so it is softer, a little loftier and all natural fiber, but you handle it a bit more gently so it does not stretch. - Do I need to pre-wash the batting strip?
- Therm O Web recommends pre-washing by hand, and shrinkage is under 5%. Most of our rug makers skip it, since a rug gets heavy when wet, and simply wash the finished rug cold on delicate and tumble dry low; the small shrinkage tightens the rope slightly rather than distorting it.
- Is this batting microwave safe for rope bowls?
- It is 100% cotton with no scrim or resin, but Therm O Web's product rated and labeled for microwave projects is Bliss Micro Magic. For bowls, cozies or warmers that will go in the microwave, use Micro Magic with 100% cotton fabric and 100% cotton thread, and follow its safety directions. - Can I use it for bag straps and handles?
