Description
Classic Fuse is a woven fusible interfacing cut 59" wide, made for bag making. It gives body and structure to quilting cotton, cotton canvas, linen, lightweight wool, rayon, silk and the other light fabrics people line bags with, and because it is woven it moves with the fabric instead of fighting it. The 5-yard cut is the sweet spot for most bag makers: enough for several full-size totes with linings, without committing to a bolt.
The wide cut is the point. Most woven fusibles come 20" wide, which means piecing interfacing under a tote body or a wide lining panel; at 59" you cut every bag piece in one go, and garment yardage lays out the same way. The hand after fusing is crisp but still soft enough to turn and topstitch. It is also a good choice for garments, machine embroidery backing, wearable art and costumes.
For a single project start with the 2-yard package; for production work the 10-yard cut is the better value. Fuse with a dry iron and a pressing cloth, pressing in overlapping lifts rather than sliding, and test on a scrap of your fabric first.

- Classic Fuse vs Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex: which one for bags?
- Both are woven fusibles that give bag fabric crisp body without stiffness, and both come in a wide cut. SF101 is the 100% cotton standard most bag patterns call for and the one we stock in depth; Classic Fuse is cut a hair narrower at 59" and is sold by the yard in 2, 5 and 10 yard lengths. If your pattern names SF101, use it; if you want yardage without a bolt, Classic Fuse does the same job. Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex 60" x 10 yd bolt
- Woven or non-woven fusible interfacing for a bag?
- Woven. A woven interfacing has a grain and drapes like fabric, so the bag body stays soft, turns cleanly and does not crack at the folds. Non-woven fusibles are fine for small flat pieces but tend to go papery on a large panel. For a bag that stands up on its own, add foam or a heavy stabilizer over the woven layer rather than switching to a stiffer non-woven.
- Why 59" wide instead of the usual 20"?
- So you can cut a full tote body, a gusset or a wide lining panel from one piece. Narrow interfacing has to be pieced under large pattern pieces, which shows as a ridge after fusing. The wide cut also lays out garment pieces the same way you cut the fashion fabric.
- How do I fuse it without bubbles?
- Place the glue side (the textured, slightly shiny side) against the wrong side of the fabric, cover with a damp or dry pressing cloth, and press with a medium-hot iron, holding 10 to 15 seconds in each spot and lifting to the next with a little overlap. Do not slide the iron. Let the piece cool flat before moving it. Test on a scrap first.
- Do I need to pre-shrink it?
- If the finished bag or garment will be washed, it is worth a soak. Fold the interfacing into a sink of warm water for ten minutes, squeeze gently without wringing, and dry flat; do not run it through the washer or dryer on its own or the adhesive can loosen. For bags that are spot-cleaned, most makers skip it.
- Is it good for t-shirt quilts and embroidery?
- Yes for both. A lightweight woven fusible stops knit t-shirt panels from stretching while you piece them, and it gives a stable base for machine embroidery on light fabrics. If you only make t-shirt quilts, the EZ-TEE packs are pre-cut for that job. EZ-TEE woven fusible 60" x 72"
