Description

Hobbs 12 oz polyester on a 96" x 18-yard roll: a thick, high-loft batting for comforters, puffy tied quilts and trapunto work. At about 3/4" loft it is well past what you would run through a domestic machine; it suits longarms with generous throat space and quilters who tie or stitch 4" to 6" apart. Of the Hobbs by-the-ounce polys, 12 oz sits between the 9 oz and the 16 oz.

Polyester does not shrink, so the finished piece stays the size you quilted it, and the loft recovers after washing. It is light for its thickness and works with both light and dark fabrics (test dark fabrics first). Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing.

This product is tightly compressed into a bag for shipment. You will need to open the bag and let the product loft up for 1-2 weeks before use. Shipped in a box to prevent damage.

Please Note: We are unable to ship rolls of batting to Alaska, Hawaii or anywhere outside the 48 contiguous states. If an order comes through from these locations, it will be cancelled and refunded. Sorry for the trouble.

Compare and choose

6 oz, 9 oz, 12 oz or 16 oz: which Hobbs poly do I need?
The ounce number is weight per square yard, and loft rises with it. 6 oz is a puffy quilt batting that still quilts on a longarm easily; 9 oz is comforter weight; 12 oz (this roll) is about 3/4" thick for heavy comforters and trapunto; 16 oz is the thickest and is mostly tied rather than quilted. If you are unsure, the by-the-ounce sample pack lets you feel all of them. Hobbs by-the-ounce sample pack
Can I quilt 12 oz poly on a longarm?
Yes, with a few adjustments. Loosen the batting and backing tension slightly, use a larger needle, and keep designs open; stitch lines 4" to 6" apart are the limit Hobbs recommends. Dense custom quilting flattens the loft you are paying for, so this batting is best with pantographs, big meanders or tying.
Hobbs 12 oz vs Quilters Dream Puff: what is the difference?
Both are high-loft polyester battings that do not shrink. Dream Puff is a lighter, bonded batting with a very soft hand and about 1/3" loft, so it still quilts comfortably on most machines. Hobbs 12 oz is roughly twice as thick and is the choice when you want a true comforter look. For a puffy but still quiltable bed quilt, Dream Puff or Hobbs 6 oz is usually the better pick. Quilters Dream Puff 93" x 25-yard roll
Why does the roll look thin when it arrives?
It is vacuum-compressed into a bag for shipping. Open the bag as soon as it arrives and let the batting relax for one to two weeks before you load it; it recovers to full loft on its own. Do not judge the thickness on delivery day.
Does polyester batting shrink?
No. Hobbs polyester has no shrinkage, so there is nothing to pre-wash and the finished quilt stays the size you made it. Any crinkle after washing comes from the cotton fabric, not the batting.
Can I use this for a hot pad or microwave bowl cozy?
No. Polyester melts and can scorch in a microwave. Use 100% cotton batting with no scrim, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, for anything that will be heated. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 45" x 1-yard package
Do you ship this roll to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Rolls ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut polyester packages, such as Polydown, ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
