Description

A small pack of Hobbs' bonded "BY" polyester battings in their different weights, so you can feel the loft before buying a roll. These are the thick, springy polyesters used for tied quilts, comforters, puffy baby quilts and craft work, not the thin Thermore or Poly-Down. The pack holds five 10" x 10" squares covering the 6 oz, 9 oz, 12 oz and 16 oz weights.

The ounce number is weight per square yard; heavier means thicker and loftier. The 6 oz is the everyday high-loft choice for machine-quilted or tied quilts. The 9 oz and 12 oz are for comforters and tied quilts where you want real puff. The 16 oz is the thickest, for maximum warmth and volume. Polyester does not shrink, resists bearding and migration, and is machine washable, so these also suit quilts that will be laundered often.

What does 6 oz, 9 oz, 12 oz and 16 oz mean?
Weight per square yard. A heavier number is a thicker, loftier batting. The 6 oz is the thinnest of the group and the easiest to machine quilt; the 16 oz is the thickest and is nearly always tied rather than quilted.
Which weight should I use for a tied quilt or comforter?
Most tied quilts use 9 oz or 12 oz for a noticeable puff; 16 oz is for a comforter you want to sink into. If you plan to machine quilt rather than tie, stay at 6 oz, which still gives a high loft without fighting the machine. Hobbs Polyester 9 oz 96" roll
Is this the same as the regular Hobbs Batting Sample Pack?
No. The regular pack has 14" squares of thirteen Hobbs cottons, blends, wools and premium polyesters (Thermore, Poly-Down). This pack is only the heavy bonded polyester weights. Get the regular pack if you are deciding between cotton, wool and poly; get this one if you already know you want high-loft polyester. Hobbs Batting Sample Pack
Do these polyester battings shrink?
No. Polyester does not shrink, so a tied comforter made with any of these weights stays the same size after washing. There is no crinkle effect either; if you want the antique crinkled look, use a cotton or 80/20 batting.
Can I use polyester batting for hot pads or microwave projects?
No. Polyester can melt and is never microwave-safe. For microwave bowl cozies use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% cotton with no scrim. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
Hobbs BY polyester vs Pellon or Quilters Dream polyester?
All are bonded polyesters that do not shrink and wash well. Hobbs BY is sold by weight (6 to 16 oz) so you choose loft directly. Quilters Dream Poly comes in Request, Select, Deluxe and Puff lofts, and Pellon polyester is a single mid-loft batting in standard package sizes. Sample first; loft is the whole decision with polyester. Quilters Dream Puff package
