Description
Katahdin Premium Winter is the polyester member of Bosal's Katahdin family: a 4.5oz midweight batt of soft microfiber, cut to 108" x 90". It is sized for queen bed quilts up to about 104" x 86".
The fibers are needle-punched with no resins, glues or binders, so the batting is light and drapey but warm, and it springs back after folding. It works for hand quilting, machine quilting and crafts. Choose it when you want warmth without weight, or a quilt that will not develop the crinkle of cotton.

Compare and choose
- Polyester vs cotton batting: why choose Katahdin Winter?
- Polyester is lighter for its warmth, keeps its loft, does not shrink the way cotton does and gives a smoother, puffier finish. Cotton gives a flatter, crinkled, traditional look and breathes more. If you want a cozy quilt that stays light, Winter is the pick; for an antique look, use Katahdin Summer or Autumn cotton. Katahdin Autumn 4oz cotton
- 108" x 90" or 94" x 96": which Winter size do I need?
- Measure your top and add about 4" to each dimension. The 108" x 90" covers queen tops up to about 104" x 86". The 94" x 96" is a full/double size and covers tops up to about 90" x 92". A full 90" x 108" queen top needs more than either; consider a king-size batt. Katahdin Winter 94" x 96"
- Katahdin Winter vs Hobbs Polydown: how do they compare?
- Both are soft, washable polyester battings for warm, light quilts. Winter is needle-punched with no resin or binder; Hobbs Polydown is our stocked polyester in packages and 108" and 120" rolls. If you quilt on a longarm and want to buy by the roll, Polydown is the easier line to stay with. Hobbs Polydown packages
- Is Katahdin Winter good for hand quilting?
- Yes. Bosal rates it for hand quilting, machine quilting and crafts. The microfiber is soft and needles easily, and there is no resin or glue to drag on the needle.
- Can I use polyester batting in a hot pad or microwave bowl cozy?
- No. Polyester is not microwave-safe and is not a heat barrier. For a microwave bowl cozy use 100% cotton batting with no scrim and cotton thread; for hot pads, use an insulated batting such as Insul-Bright with cotton batting. Insul-Bright 45" x 1 yd
