Description

One yard of Insul-Bright, 45" wide, the standard amount for a batch of pot holders, a pair of oven mitts, a casserole carrier or a couple of insulated lunch bags. Insul-Bright is a needle-punched thermal lining: polyester fibers are punched through a reflective metalized polyester film, so the fibers slow conductive heat while the film reflects radiant heat or cold back toward its source. It sews easily, stays flexible, is breathable and does not shrink.

For hot projects The Warm Company recommends layering cotton batting with the Insul-Bright, because steam from a hot dish passes through the breathable Insul-Bright and the cotton absorbs it. Insul-Bright is not recommended for microwave use because of the metalized film; for bowl cozies and anything microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap.

Once quilted into a finished project it can be machine washed and dried, and the finished piece can be ironed on low. It can be used in clothing, but the film crinkles audibly when it moves. If you make insulated goods regularly, the 22" x 20-yard bolt or 45" x 40-yard bolt costs less per yard.

Is Insul-Bright microwave safe?
No. Insul-Bright contains a metalized polyester film and is not recommended for microwave use. For bowl cozies and anything that will be microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that job. Insul-Bright is for oven mitts, pot holders, casserole carriers and lunch bags that stay out of the microwave. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 45" x 1 yd package
Do I need cotton batting with Insul-Bright for pot holders and oven mitts?
For anything that handles hot items, yes. Insul-Bright is breathable, so steam from a hot dish can pass through it. The Warm Company recommends adding a layer of cotton batting (Warm & Natural is the usual choice) to absorb that steam. A typical oven mitt or pot holder is outer fabric, Insul-Bright, cotton batting, lining, with the shiny side of the Insul-Bright facing the heat. Warm & Natural cotton batting package
How many pot holders or oven mitts will one yard make?
A yard is 45" x 36". Allowing for a 9" to 10" square per pot holder, you get roughly 12 to 16 pot holders, or about four pairs of standard oven mitts with some left over. Casserole carriers and lunch bags use more; plan on one yard per large carrier.
Insul-Bright vs Insul-Shine: which do I want?
Insul-Bright has polyester fibers needle-punched through a reflective metalized film, so the film is inside the batting and the product looks like a grey-flecked batting. Insul-Shine has a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to one face of a polyester batting, so the reflective layer is exposed, wipes clean and is water resistant. Use Insul-Bright for mitts, pot holders and casserole covers; use Insul-Shine for lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle carriers and anywhere you want the metallic face showing or wipeable. Insul-Shine 45" x 10 yd bolt
Is Insul-Bright heat-proof?
No. Insul-Bright is a thermal insulating material, not a heat-proof or fire-proof barrier. The polyester fibers slow conductive heat and the metalized film reflects radiant heat, which is why it works in mitts and pot holders, but you still need proper construction and the cotton batting layer, and it is not a substitute for a trivet under a hot pan.
Package or bolt?
The one-yard package is right for a project or two and ships anywhere. If you make insulated items to sell or teach, the 22" x 20-yard bolt (for small goods) or the 45" x 40-yard bolt (for bags and carriers) is the same material at a lower cost per yard. Insul-Bright 22" x 20 yd bolt
Can I wash Insul-Bright, and should I pre-wash it?
Pre-washing is optional since it does not shrink. If you want to, hand wash in mild detergent, soak about 20 minutes, rinse several times, squeeze out water without wringing, roll in a towel and dry warm or flat. Finished quilted projects go in the washer and dryer.
