Description

Insul-Shine is reflective thermal batting with the metallic layer on the outside: a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to a polyester batting. The metallic face reflects radiant heat or cold back toward its source, wipes clean and is water resistant; the batting behind it adds soft insulation and structure. That combination is why bag makers use it for insulated tote bags, soft coolers, bottle and casserole carriers, and why it turns up in specialty home projects such as window treatments and vent covers.

The 45" x 10-yard bolt is the wide format, with enough width for casserole carriers, grocery totes and large cooler panels in one piece, and enough length for a run of them. For narrow items such as lunch bags and bottle carriers, the 22" x 30-yard bolt wastes less.

Insul-Shine is machine washable. It is not microwave safe, do not iron directly on the metallic side, and it is reflective insulation rather than a heat-proof barrier.

Compare and choose

Insul-Shine vs Insul-Bright: which do I need?
Insul-Bright has polyester fibers needle-punched through a reflective metalized film, so the film is inside the batting and the product looks like a grey-flecked batting. Insul-Shine has a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to one face of a polyester batting, so the reflective layer is exposed, wipes clean and is water resistant. Use Insul-Bright for mitts, pot holders and casserole covers; use Insul-Shine for lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle carriers and anywhere you want the metallic face showing or wipeable. Insul-Bright 45" x 40 yd bolt
45" x 10 yards or 22" x 30 yards?
Choose 45" for casserole carriers, soft coolers, grocery totes and anything wider than 22" in one direction. Choose the 22" bolt for lunch bags, bottle carriers and cozies, where the narrow width cuts with less waste and you get three times the length. Insul-Shine 22" x 30 yd bolt
Can I use Insul-Shine for a cooler bag?
Yes, that is its best use. Put the metallic side facing in, toward the food, so it reflects cold back and wipes clean after spills. Pair it with a lining if you want a sewn interior, or leave the metallic face exposed; it is water resistant, though not waterproof at the seams.
Is Insul-Shine microwave safe?
No. Insul-Shine has a metallic reflective layer and is not microwave safe; never use it in a bowl cozy or anything that will be microwaved. For microwave projects use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 45" x 1 yd package
Can I iron Insul-Shine?
Do not iron directly on the metallic surface; it will damage the finish. Press from the fabric side, or cover the metallic face with a pressing cloth, and follow The Warm Company's care instructions. Finished projects are machine washable.
Is Insul-Shine heat-proof or fire-resistant?
No. Insul-Shine reflects radiant heat and slows heat transfer, which is what an insulated bag or carrier needs, but it is not heat-proof or fire-resistant and it is not a substitute for building-code insulation. Use it for the projects it is meant for and test unfamiliar fabric combinations first.
Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
