Description
Insul-Bright is the thermal batting behind most handmade oven mitts, pot holders, casserole carriers and insulated lunch bags, and this 45" x 40-yard bolt is the production format. Polyester fibers are needle-punched through a reflective metalized polyester film: the fibers slow conductive heat and the film reflects radiant heat or cold back toward its source. It sews like a batting, stays flexible, is breathable and washable, and does not shrink.
Forty yards at 45" wide is for people who make insulated goods in quantity: craft sellers, quilt shops, classrooms and studios. If you only need a few mitts, the one-yard package is the same material, and the 22" x 20-yard bolt cuts with less waste for small items.
Two things to know before you buy. First, for hot projects The Warm Company recommends adding a layer of cotton batting with the Insul-Bright, because steam passes through Insul-Bright and cotton absorbs it. Second, Insul-Bright contains a metalized film and is not recommended for microwave use; for bowl cozies and anything that goes in a microwave, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap instead.

Compare and choose
- Is Insul-Bright microwave safe?
- No. Insul-Bright contains a metalized polyester film and is not recommended for microwave use. For bowl cozies and anything that will be microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that job. Insul-Bright is for oven mitts, pot holders, casserole carriers and lunch bags that stay out of the microwave. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 90" x 9 yd roll
- Do I need cotton batting with Insul-Bright for oven mitts and pot holders?
- For anything that handles hot items, yes. Insul-Bright is breathable, so steam from a hot dish can pass through it. The Warm Company recommends adding a layer of cotton batting (Warm & Natural is the usual choice) to absorb that steam. A typical oven mitt or pot holder is outer fabric, Insul-Bright, cotton batting, lining, with the shiny side of the Insul-Bright facing the heat. Warm & Natural cotton batting 90" x 40 yd roll
- 45" x 40 yards or 22" x 20 yards: which bolt?
- Pot holders, mitts and bowl-size items cut efficiently from the 22" width, so the 22" bolt is the low-waste choice for small goods. Casserole carriers, lunch bags, table runners and anything over 22" in one dimension need the 45" width. The 40-yard bolt is the lowest cost per yard and is what production sewers buy. Insul-Bright 22" x 20 yd bolt
- Insul-Bright vs Insul-Shine: what is the difference?
- Insul-Bright has polyester fibers needle-punched through a reflective metalized film, so the film is inside the batting and the product looks like a grey-flecked batting. Insul-Shine has a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to one face of a polyester batting, so the reflective layer is exposed, wipes clean and is water resistant. Use Insul-Bright for mitts, pot holders and casserole covers; use Insul-Shine for lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle carriers and anywhere you want the metallic face showing or wipeable. Insul-Shine 45" x 10 yd bolt
- Is Insul-Bright heat-proof?
- No. Insul-Bright is a thermal insulating material, not a heat-proof or fire-proof barrier. The polyester fibers slow conductive heat and the metalized film reflects radiant heat, which is why it works in mitts and pot holders, but you still need proper construction and the cotton batting layer, and it is not a substitute for a trivet under a hot pan.
- Does Insul-Bright need pre-washing, and how do I wash the finished project?
- Pre-washing is optional because Insul-Bright does not shrink. If you do, hand wash it in mild detergent, soak about 20 minutes, rinse, squeeze without wringing, and dry warm or flat. Once quilted into a mitt or bag, the finished piece can be machine washed and dried.
- How many layers of Insul-Bright should I use?
- One layer is enough for most hot and cold projects. For oven mitts and pot holders, pair that one layer with cotton batting rather than stacking two layers of Insul-Bright; the cotton handles the steam, which the reflective film cannot.
- Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
- No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
