Description

The 22" x 20-yard Insul-Bright bolt is the low-waste format for small insulated goods: pot holders, hot pads, mug rugs, mitts and lunch bags cut cleanly from a 22" width with little left over. Insul-Bright is a thermal batting made by needle-punching polyester fibers through a reflective metalized film; the film reflects radiant heat or cold and the fibers slow conductive heat. It is breathable, flexible, sews like a light batting and is machine washable.

Twenty yards is enough for a season of craft-fair pot holders or a classroom's worth of oven mitts. For casserole carriers, table runners and bags that need more than 22" in one direction, use the 45" x 40-yard bolt; for a single project, the 45" x 1-yard package.

Because it contains a metalized film, Insul-Bright is not microwave safe; use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap for bowl cozies and anything microwaved. For items that handle hot dishes, follow The Warm Company's guidance and add a layer of cotton batting with the Insul-Bright to absorb steam.

Compare and choose

Why buy the 22" width instead of 45"?
Less waste on small items. Two 10" pot holder squares or one oven mitt pattern fit across 22" with almost nothing left over, where a 45" width leaves awkward strips. If your projects are mostly under 22" in one dimension, this bolt is the efficient choice; if you make carriers, runners or bags, go to 45". Insul-Bright 45" x 40 yd bolt
Is Insul-Bright microwave safe?
No. Insul-Bright contains a metalized polyester film and is not recommended for microwave use. For bowl cozies and anything that will be microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that job. Insul-Bright is for oven mitts, pot holders, casserole carriers and lunch bags that stay out of the microwave. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 22" x 10 yd
Do I need cotton batting with Insul-Bright for pot holders?
For anything that handles hot items, yes. Insul-Bright is breathable, so steam from a hot dish can pass through it. The Warm Company recommends adding a layer of cotton batting (Warm & Natural is the usual choice) to absorb that steam. A typical oven mitt or pot holder is outer fabric, Insul-Bright, cotton batting, lining, with the shiny side of the Insul-Bright facing the heat. Warm & Natural cotton batting package
Insul-Bright vs Wrap-N-Zap: which do I want for kitchen projects?
They solve different problems. Wrap-N-Zap is 100% cotton with no film, made to go in the microwave; it is the choice for bowl cozies, potato bags and anything heated in the microwave. Insul-Bright has a reflective film that makes it a better insulator for oven mitts, pot holders and lunch bags, but it must stay out of the microwave. Many makers keep both on the shelf. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 22" x 10 yd
Is Insul-Bright heat-proof or fire-proof?
No. Insul-Bright is a thermal insulating material, not a heat-proof or fire-proof barrier. The polyester fibers slow conductive heat and the metalized film reflects radiant heat, which is why it works in mitts and pot holders, but you still need proper construction and the cotton batting layer, and it is not a substitute for a trivet under a hot pan.
Insul-Bright vs Insul-Shine?
Insul-Bright has polyester fibers needle-punched through a reflective metalized film, so the film is inside the batting and the product looks like a grey-flecked batting. Insul-Shine has a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to one face of a polyester batting, so the reflective layer is exposed, wipes clean and is water resistant. Use Insul-Bright for mitts, pot holders and casserole covers; use Insul-Shine for lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle carriers and anywhere you want the metallic face showing or wipeable. Insul-Shine 22" x 30 yd bolt
Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
