Description
Insul-Shine is the reflective member of the Insul-Bright family: a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to a polyester batting, so the reflective layer sits on the outside where it can show, wipe clean and shed water. The metallic face reflects radiant heat or cold and the batting behind it slows heat transfer, which is what you want in insulated lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle and casserole carriers, grocery totes and specialty home projects such as window treatments and vent covers. Decorative stitching stands out against the metallic face if you leave it exposed, or you can cover it with fabric.
This 22" x 30-yard bolt is the narrow format. At 22" wide it cuts lunch bags, bottle carriers, cozies and panel pieces with little waste, and 30 yards covers production runs for craft sellers, studios and classrooms. For carriers and projects wider than 22", use the 45" x 10-yard bolt.
Insul-Shine is machine washable, but it is not microwave safe and you must not iron directly on the metallic surface. It is reflective insulation, not a heat-proof barrier.

Compare and choose
- Insul-Shine vs Insul-Bright: which should I use?
- Insul-Bright has polyester fibers needle-punched through a reflective metalized film, so the film is inside the batting and the product looks like a grey-flecked batting. Insul-Shine has a shiny metallized polyester surface pin-welded to one face of a polyester batting, so the reflective layer is exposed, wipes clean and is water resistant. Use Insul-Bright for mitts, pot holders and casserole covers; use Insul-Shine for lunch bags, soft coolers, bottle carriers and anywhere you want the metallic face showing or wipeable. Insul-Bright 22" x 20 yd bolt
- 22" x 30 yards or 45" x 10 yards?
- The 22" bolt is for narrow pieces: lunch bags, bottle carriers, cozies, panels under 22" in one direction, and it gives you three times the length. The 45" bolt is for casserole carriers, soft coolers, grocery totes and home projects that need a wider piece. Both are the same Insul-Shine. Insul-Shine 45" x 10 yd bolt
- Is Insul-Shine microwave safe?
- No. Insul-Shine has a metallic reflective layer and is not microwave safe; never use it in a bowl cozy or anything that will be microwaved. For microwave projects use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 22" x 10 yd
- Can I iron Insul-Shine?
- Do not iron directly on the metallic surface; it will damage the finish. Press from the fabric side, or cover the metallic face with a pressing cloth, and follow The Warm Company's care instructions. Finished projects are machine washable.
- Is Insul-Shine waterproof?
- The metallic surface is water resistant and wipes clean, which is why it suits lunch bags and soft coolers where condensation and spills happen. It is not fully waterproof; seams and the batting side will take on water, so do not count on it to hold liquid.
- Which side faces the heat or cold?
- Put the shiny metallic side toward whatever you are keeping hot or cold: inside a lunch bag or cooler, facing the food. The batting side goes toward the outer fabric. If you do not want the metallic look, cover it with lining fabric; it still reflects through a light fabric layer.
- Is Insul-Shine heat-proof?
- No. Insul-Shine reflects radiant heat and slows heat transfer, which is what an insulated bag or carrier needs, but it is not heat-proof or fire-resistant and it is not a substitute for building-code insulation. Use it for the projects it is meant for and test unfamiliar fabric combinations first.
- Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
- No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
