Autumn is 4 oz, a midweight cotton with a little more body. Summer is 3 oz, lighter and cooler, for warm-weather quilts and wall hangings. Both are 100% cotton with no scrim.

Katahdin vs Hobbs Heirloom Cotton: which should I buy?

Katahdin has no scrim and can be stitched up to 8" apart. Hobbs Heirloom Cotton is needled onto a thin scrim for extra strength on a frame and should be quilted within 4". Choose Katahdin for wide spacing and a pure-cotton batt; choose Hobbs for a lower loft and firmer handling.

Do I need to pre-wash it?

No pre-shrinking is required. As with any cotton batting, the finished quilt may draw up slightly in the first wash.

Is 90" x 96" big enough for a queen?

For a queen top up to about 86" wide, yes. Many queen tops are 90" or wider, and those need a larger batt; the 4 oz Katahdin also comes 120" x 120".

Can I use it for microwave bowl cozies?

Yes, with care. It is 100% cotton with no scrim or resin, so there is nothing synthetic in the batt to melt. Use 100% cotton fabric and cotton thread. For frequent kitchen projects, Pellon Wrap-N-Zap is made for the job.

Katahdin Premium Autumn is a 4 oz, midweight 100% cotton batting with nothing else in it: no scrim, no resin. The cotton is triple-carded and needle-punched, which makes it very stable for an all-cotton batt. It can be stitched up to 8" apart, so it suits both widely spaced quilting and dense work.

The package description gives the size as 90" x 96", a good fit for full and double bed quilts and for queen tops up to about 86" wide. No pre-shrinking is required. Choose it when you want a natural, breathable cotton quilt with a medium loft, and when you want to quilt farther apart than most cotton battings allow.
