Description
Katahdin Premium Autumn 4oz is a 100% cotton batting from Bosal, cut to 72" x 90" for twin quilts and generous lap throws, with a finished top up to about 68" x 86". Autumn is the 4oz midweight in the Katahdin line: a little more body and warmth than the 3oz Summer, with a medium loft that gives quilting more definition while still lying flat.
The cotton is triple-carded and needle-punched, with no scrim, resin or binders, so it is 100% natural fiber. Needle-punching makes it very stable: you can stitch up to 8" apart, and it needs no pre-shrinking.

Compare and choose
- Katahdin Summer 3oz vs Autumn 4oz: which weight should I buy?
- Both are the same 100% needle-punched cotton with no scrim, quilted up to 8" apart. Summer 3oz is lighter and lower loft, easier to hand quilt and cooler on the bed. Autumn 4oz is a midweight with more body, a slightly fuller look and a bit more warmth. Pick Summer for hand quilting and warm climates, Autumn for an everyday bed quilt. Katahdin Summer 3oz 72" x 90"
- What size quilt top does the 72" x 90" fit?
- Plan on a finished top up to about 68" x 86", which leaves 2" of batting on every side for quilting. For a full or double top, go up to the 90" x 96" size. Katahdin Autumn 4oz 90" x 96"
- Katahdin vs Warm & Natural: what is the difference?
- Both are needle-punched 100% cotton. Warm & Natural has a scrim, which lets it be quilted up to 10" apart and makes it a little firmer. Katahdin has no scrim, resin or binder and should be quilted within 8". Choose Katahdin if you want pure cotton fiber with nothing added; choose Warm & Natural for very open quilting. - Do I need to pre-wash Katahdin cotton batting?
- No. Katahdin is made to be used straight from the package; no pre-shrinking is required. As with any cotton batting, make a small test sandwich if you want to see how much texture the finished quilt gets after its first wash.
- Is there a scrim, and does that matter?
- There is no scrim in Katahdin. A scrim is a thin binder layer that lets battings be quilted farther apart. Without one, Katahdin relies on needle-punching for stability, which is why it can still be quilted up to 8" apart. Hand quilters often prefer no-scrim cotton because the needle passes through more easily.
- Is Katahdin Autumn a good choice for a longarm or home machine?
- Yes. The 4oz needle-punched cotton is stable, does not shift and holds an even surface under the needle. Its medium loft gives quilting a bit more definition than the 3oz Summer. Load it with at least 4" extra on each side for a frame.
