Description
Soft & Bright by the case, for quilt shops, longarm studios, guilds and charity programs that go through polyester batting in volume. Each case holds one pre-cut size: 20 craft, 15 baby, 6 twin, 4 full, 4 queen or 3 king batts. Soft & Bright is The Warm Company's needle-punched polyester: fine polyester fibers needle-punched into a thin, stable base, with no resins or glues, so the batting stays even, does not separate, bunch or migrate, and resists bearding.
It is the easy-care batting. Finished quilts machine wash and dry with no batting shrinkage, and polyester dries fast, which makes it the right call for children's quilts, everyday bedding, throws and anything that will be washed often. The needle-punched base gives it enough body that the quilt top and backing cling to it, so machine and free-motion quilters need less basting spray, and it sits in a hoop for hand quilting or embroidery without distorting. - Soft & Bright vs Hobbs Poly-Down: which polyester?
- Both are polyester battings that do not shrink and wash easily. Soft & Bright is needle-punched into a thin stable base with no resins or glues, so it clings to fabric, resists bearding and can be quilted up to 10" apart. Hobbs Poly-Down is a bonded polyester with a springier, loftier feel and should be quilted within about 4". - Soft & Bright vs Warm & Natural: polyester or cotton?
- Soft & Bright is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, so there is no crinkle after the first wash, a lighter weight, quicker drying, and a little more loft. Warm & Natural is cotton with a scrim: flatter, heavier, shrinks about 3% for a traditional crinkled look, and breathes more. Both can be quilted up to 10" apart. - Case or bolt: which is the better buy for a studio?
- A case gives pre-cut batts in one size with no cutting and no waste, which suits shops, charity programs and anyone who makes the same size repeatedly. - How far apart can I quilt or tie Soft & Bright?
- Up to 10" between quilting lines or ties. That is wide enough for tied comforters and open modern designs, and it is why charity and kids' quilt programs like it: less quilting per quilt without the batting shifting.
- Does Soft & Bright shrink, and can I wash it in a machine?
- It does not shrink. Once quilted, the quilt machine washes and dries, and the polyester dries faster than cotton. There is no need to pre-wash, and the finished quilt stays flat rather than crinkling.
- Is Soft & Bright microwave safe?
- No. Soft & Bright is polyester and must stay out of the microwave. For bowl cozies and anything microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. - Is a 90" x 108" queen batt big enough for my queen quilt?
- For a standard queen top around 90" x 100" or smaller, yes, as long as you have 2" to 4" of batting beyond the top on each side for the longarm or for trimming. If your queen top runs wider than about 86", step up to the king case (120" x 124").
