Description
Soft & Bright on a 45" x 50-yard bolt is the narrow-width polyester for crib quilts, wall hangings, table runners, placemats, bags and craft projects, and for studios that cut a lot of small pieces. Soft & Bright is The Warm Company's needle-punched polyester: fine fibers evenly needle-punched into a thin, stable base with no resins or glues, so the loft is consistent, the batting stays put, and quilting stitches show cleanly on the surface.
It is lighter and a touch loftier than cotton, does not shrink, and the finished piece machine washes and dries fast. The needle-punched base gives it enough body that fabric clings to it, which helps on small projects quilted on a domestic machine, and it can be quilted or tied up to 10" apart. Fifty yards is a lot of batting; this bolt is for shops, classrooms, craft sellers and anyone who makes baby quilts and small quilted goods in volume.
For bed quilts, step up to the 90" x 25-yard bolt or the 124" king-width bolt.

Compare and choose
- Is 45" wide enough for a baby quilt?
- Yes. A standard crib cut is 45" x 60", so it fits the width exactly, and you get about 30 of them from the 50-yard bolt. For a crib quilt wider than about 41", where you want 2" of margin each side, use the 90" bolt and cut two from one width. Soft & Bright 90" x 25 yd bolt
- Soft & Bright vs Hobbs polyester: which should I buy?
- Both are polyester battings that do not shrink and wash easily. Soft & Bright is needle-punched into a thin stable base with no resins or glues, so it clings to fabric, resists bearding and can be quilted up to 10" apart. Hobbs Poly-Down is a bonded polyester with a springier, loftier feel and should be quilted within about 4". Choose Soft & Bright for free-motion and hand quilting, children's quilts and open quilting designs; choose Poly-Down when you want more puff. Hobbs Polyester 6 oz 96" roll
- Soft & Bright vs Warm & Natural for a baby quilt?
- Soft & Bright is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, so there is no crinkle after the first wash, a lighter weight, quicker drying, and a little more loft. Warm & Natural is cotton with a scrim: flatter, heavier, shrinks about 3% for a traditional crinkled look, and breathes more. Both can be quilted up to 10" apart. For kids' quilts, charity quilts and bedding that gets washed every week, Soft & Bright is the practical choice; for a traditional heirloom look, use the cotton. Warm & Natural 45" x 40 yd bolt
- Is polyester batting good for bags and placemats?
- For soft, quilted bags and placemats, yes; it adds loft and shows quilting well, and it washes without shrinking. For structured, stand-up bags you want fusible fleece or a foam stabilizer instead, and for hot pads you need Insul-Bright with cotton, not polyester. Fusible Warm Fleece 1 45" x 20 yd bolt
- Is Soft & Bright microwave safe?
- No. Soft & Bright is polyester and must stay out of the microwave. For bowl cozies and anything microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. For oven mitts and pot holders that stay out of the microwave, use Insul-Bright with a cotton batting layer. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap microwaveable batting
- How far apart can I quilt it, and does it need pre-washing?
- Quilt or tie up to 10" apart. No pre-washing; it does not shrink, and the finished project machine washes and dries.
- Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
- No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
