Description
Soft & Bright on a 124" x 20-yard bolt is the king-width polyester for longarmers. At 124" it clears a 120" king top in one piece with margin for the frame, and it covers oversized queens and large wall pieces without a batting seam. Soft & Bright is The Warm Company's needle-punched polyester: fine fibers needle-punched into a thin stable base, no resins or glues, so the loft is even across the width and the batting stays put under the needle.
It is the easy-care choice. No shrinkage, so the finished quilt stays flat instead of crinkling; machine wash and dry; quick to dry. The needle-punched base gives it enough body that top and backing cling to it, which longarmers and free-motion quilters appreciate, and it can be quilted or tied up to 10" apart. It is lighter and a touch loftier than cotton, with no bearding through fabric.
If you rarely quilt kings, the 90" x 25-yard bolt covers queens and smaller at less cost per yard; for narrow projects use the 45" x 50-yard bolt.

Compare and choose
- Do I need the 124" bolt for a king quilt?
- Yes. A king top is 108" to 120" wide, and you want 4" or more of batting beyond the top on each side for the frame or for trimming. The 90" bolt cannot cover a king in one piece; the 124" bolt does, with margin, and it also handles oversized queens without a batting seam. Soft & Bright 90" x 25 yd bolt
- Soft & Bright vs Hobbs Poly-Down 120": which king-width polyester?
- Both are polyester battings that do not shrink and wash easily. Soft & Bright is needle-punched into a thin stable base with no resins or glues, so it clings to fabric, resists bearding and can be quilted up to 10" apart. Hobbs Poly-Down is a bonded polyester with a springier, loftier feel and should be quilted within about 4". Choose Soft & Bright for free-motion and hand quilting, children's quilts and open quilting designs; choose Poly-Down when you want more puff. Hobbs Poly-Down 120" roll
- Soft & Bright vs Warm & Natural 124": polyester or cotton for a king?
- Soft & Bright is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, so there is no crinkle after the first wash, a lighter weight, quicker drying, and a little more loft. Warm & Natural is cotton with a scrim: flatter, heavier, shrinks about 3% for a traditional crinkled look, and breathes more. Both can be quilted up to 10" apart. For kids' quilts, charity quilts and bedding that gets washed every week, Soft & Bright is the practical choice; for a traditional heirloom look, use the cotton. Warm & Natural 124" x 30 yd bolt
- How far apart can I quilt Soft & Bright?
- Up to 10" between quilting lines or ties. On a longarm that means an open pantograph or wide custom work is fine; the needle-punched base keeps the batting from shifting between lines.
- Does polyester batting beard or shift?
- Soft & Bright is needle-punched into a stable base with no glues, which is what keeps the fibers from separating, bunching or migrating, and it is designed to resist bearding. It is not a loose bonded polyester, so it handles more like a cotton blend under the machine.
- Can I pre-wash it, and will it shrink?
- No need to pre-wash, and it does not shrink. Quilt it straight off the bolt; the finished quilt machine washes and dries flat.
- Is Soft & Bright microwave safe?
- No. Soft & Bright is polyester and must stay out of the microwave. For bowl cozies and anything microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. For oven mitts and pot holders that stay out of the microwave, use Insul-Bright with a cotton batting layer. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap microwaveable batting
