Description
Soft & Bright on a 90" x 25-yard bolt is the everyday polyester roll: wide enough for queen tops and everything smaller, long enough for about eight queens, and the format most longarmers and studios start with. Soft & Bright is The Warm Company's needle-punched polyester, with fine fibers needle-punched into a thin stable base and no resins or glues, so the loft is even across the width and the batting does not shift, bunch or beard.
It is the batting for quilts that get washed: no shrinkage, so the finished quilt stays flat; machine wash and dry; quick to dry. Top and backing cling to the needle-punched base, which cuts down on basting spray for machine and free-motion work, and it can be quilted or tied up to 10" apart. Expect a lighter, slightly loftier feel than cotton with crisp stitch definition.
For king tops, use the 124" x 20-yard bolt. For crib quilts and small projects, the 45" x 50-yard bolt wastes less.

Compare and choose
- Will the 90" bolt cover a queen quilt?
- Yes, with the 108" side of the queen cut running along the bolt. A queen top up to about 86" wide fits with 2" of margin each side. A king top does not fit a 90" width in one piece; use the 124" bolt. Soft & Bright 124" x 20 yd bolt
- Soft & Bright vs Hobbs Poly-Down: which polyester for a longarm?
- Both are polyester battings that do not shrink and wash easily. Soft & Bright is needle-punched into a thin stable base with no resins or glues, so it clings to fabric, resists bearding and can be quilted up to 10" apart. Hobbs Poly-Down is a bonded polyester with a springier, loftier feel and should be quilted within about 4". Choose Soft & Bright for free-motion and hand quilting, children's quilts and open quilting designs; choose Poly-Down when you want more puff. Hobbs Poly-Down 108" roll
- Soft & Bright vs Warm & Natural 90": polyester or cotton?
- Soft & Bright is 100% polyester: no shrinkage, so there is no crinkle after the first wash, a lighter weight, quicker drying, and a little more loft. Warm & Natural is cotton with a scrim: flatter, heavier, shrinks about 3% for a traditional crinkled look, and breathes more. Both can be quilted up to 10" apart. For kids' quilts, charity quilts and bedding that gets washed every week, Soft & Bright is the practical choice; for a traditional heirloom look, use the cotton. Warm & Natural 90" x 40 yd bolt
- Soft & Bright vs Quilters Dream Poly: how do they compare?
- Quilters Dream Poly comes in graded lofts (Request thinnest, Select, Deluxe, Puff), so you pick the weight. Soft & Bright is one mid-weight loft, needle-punched with no glues, and is quilted up to 10" apart. If you want to tune loft, look at Dream; if you want one dependable polyester at a lower cost per yard, Soft & Bright is it. Quilters Dream Select Poly 93" queen roll
- How far apart can I quilt Soft & Bright?
- Up to 10" between lines or ties, which allows open pantographs, tied comforters and modern minimal quilting without the batting shifting.
- Does it shrink or need pre-washing?
- No and no. Quilt it straight from the bolt; the finished quilt machine washes and dries flat, with no crinkle.
- Is Soft & Bright microwave safe?
- No. Soft & Bright is polyester and must stay out of the microwave. For bowl cozies and anything microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, a 100% cotton batting made for that purpose. For oven mitts and pot holders that stay out of the microwave, use Insul-Bright with a cotton batting layer. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap microwaveable batting
- Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
- No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
