Description

Fusible Warm Fleece 1 is the one-sided fusible polyester fleece our bag makers reach for when a tote, handbag, basket or placemat needs soft body without a separate basting step. One side carries Steam-A-Seam 2 adhesive. Press that side to the wrong side of your fabric and the fleece stays put through cutting, assembly and quilting, so layers do not shift, fold or wrinkle under the needle. The 45" x 20-yard bolt is for people who use fusible fleece by the project rather than by the package: bag makers, studios, classrooms and anyone who is tired of buying one-yard packs.

It is 100% polyester, so it adds loft and dimension while keeping a flexible hand, and it is machine washable and made to keep its loft after washing. How firm the result is depends on how you press it: a quick, gentle pass with steam gives a soft, pliable bond for soft books and quilted accessories, while more steam and pressure give a firmer, more structured panel for stand-up totes and baskets. It is not a bed-quilt batting; use it in small quilted pieces where you want more body than batting gives.

If you need adhesive on both sides so the fleece can be sandwiched between two fabrics, choose Fusible Warm Fleece 2. If you would rather stitch the fleece in with no adhesive at all, the Sew-In Warm Fleece bolt is the same fleece without the fusible side.

Fusible Warm Fleece 1 vs Fusible Warm Fleece 2: which do I need?
Fleece 1 is fusible on one side only; Fleece 2 is fusible on both sides. Use Fleece 1 when you are fusing fleece to the back of one fabric, which covers most bags, baskets and placemats. Use Fleece 2 when the fleece sits between two fabrics and you want both of them bonded, such as a lined panel or a two-sided table runner. Fusible Warm Fleece 2 45" x 20 yd bolt
Fusible or sew-in Warm Fleece?
The fleece is the same; the difference is the adhesive. Fusible saves pinning and spray basting and keeps layers from shifting while you sew. Sew-in has no adhesive, so there is nothing to gum up a needle, it works on fabrics that cannot take a hot iron, and it is the cheaper of the two. Most bag makers buy fusible; garment and heat-sensitive projects use sew-in. Sew-In Warm Fleece 45" x 20 yd bolt
How do I fuse Warm Fleece, and which side is the fusible side?
The fusible side feels slightly rough; the other side is smooth. Pre-wash your fabric, lay the rough side against the wrong side of the fabric, and press with steam following The Warm Company's instructions. A quick, gentle press gives a soft, pliable bond; more steam and pressure give a firmer panel. Heavier fabrics need a little more fusing time.
Fusible fleece vs foam stabilizer for bags?
Fusible fleece gives soft body and a slightly padded look; the bag keeps some drape and folds flat. Foam stabilizers such as Soft and Stable or Pellon Flex-Foam give a thicker, stand-up structure that holds its shape empty. For slouchy totes, pouches and quilted bags use fleece; for boxy, structured bags use foam, or use both with foam in the body and fleece in the lining. Soft and Stable foam stabilizer
Warm Fleece vs Pellon 987F fusible fleece: is there a difference?
Both are one-sided fusible polyester fleece that do the same job, and most patterns treat them as interchangeable. The practical differences are format and color: Pellon 987F comes on a 45" x 10-yard bolt and is also made in black, while this Warm Company bolt is 20 yards, so it is the better buy if you go through a lot of fleece. Can I use fusible fleece for hot pads or microwave bowl cozies?
No. Warm Fleece is 100% polyester and the fusible versions carry a heat-activated adhesive; neither belongs in a microwave. For bowl cozies and anything that will be microwaved, use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, the only batting we sell for that job. For oven mitts and hot pads that stay out of the microwave, use Insul-Bright with a layer of cotton batting. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap microwaveable batting
Does fusible fleece shrink, and can I wash the finished project?
The polyester fleece resists shrinking, and once fused and sewn the project can be machine washed and dried; the fleece is designed to stay soft and keep its loft. Pre-wash your fabric before fusing so the fabric does not shrink against a stable fleece.
Do you ship batting rolls to Alaska or Hawaii?
No. Rolls and boards ship only to the 48 contiguous states; orders from Alaska, Hawaii or outside the US are cancelled and refunded. Pre-cut packages ship to all locations. Shop packaged batting
