Description
Hobbs Tuscany Unbleached Cotton is a 100% cotton batting with no scrim and no binders. It is made from clean, long-staple virgin cotton that carries the Cotton Incorporated Seal, and it is needle-punched so it resists bunching and shifting. Hand quilters like how easily it needles, and it runs just as smoothly under a domestic machine or a longarm.
This twin package measures 72" x 96", sized for twin bed quilts, with a little extra length over a standard 72" x 90" twin batt. Because the cotton is unbleached, it is meant for medium and dark fabrics; under white or very light tops it can slightly darken the colors, so for pale quilts choose Tuscany Bleached in the same size instead.
Do not pre-wash it. Used straight from the package, it shrinks 3-5% the first time the finished quilt is washed, which gives the soft, crinkled antique look, and it gets softer with every wash. Quilt no more than 4" apart. As with any new batting, we suggest a small test sample before a major project to see how it needles and launders.

- Tuscany Unbleached or Tuscany Bleached: which do I need?
- Both are the same 100% cotton, scrim-free, needle-punched Tuscany batting with 3-5% shrinkage and 4" quilting distance. Unbleached (this one) suits medium and dark fabrics. - Hobbs Tuscany vs Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton: what is the difference?
- Both are unbleached 100% cotton batts from Hobbs that shrink 3-5% and should be quilted within 4". Heirloom 100% Cotton has a very thin polyester scrim needle-punched in for strength, so it resists stretching and distorting. - Is the twin 72" x 96" batt big enough for my quilt?
- Plan on batting at least 2" larger than your top on every side, and about 4" on every side if it is going on a longarm frame. This 72" x 96" batt covers finished tops up to about 68" x 92" for domestic quilting, or about 64" x 88" on a longarm. For a larger top, step up to the full 81" x 96". full 81" x 96"
- Tuscany Unbleached vs Tuscany Supreme: which is thicker?
- Tuscany Supreme is Hobbs' thickest, most plush cotton batting. It is also unbleached and scrim-free, but it should be quilted 3-4" apart and shrinks 4-6%. Choose Supreme for a cozier, puffier bed quilt; choose regular Tuscany for a flatter, traditional look and easier hand quilting. Tuscany Supreme twin 72" x 96"
- Should I pre-wash Tuscany cotton batting?
- No. Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing. Quilt it straight from the package, then expect 3-5% shrinkage in the first wash; that is what produces the crinkled, antique finish.
- Is Tuscany cotton good for longarm quilting?
- Yes. It is needle-punched so it stays put under the needle and does not shift or bunch, and the even, scrim-free cotton gives clear stitch definition. Keep your quilting within 4" so the cotton stays stable through washing. Shop packaged batting
