Description
HEAT Press Batting Together is the batting tape our customers reach for when a batt is a few inches short or when they want to use up roll ends. It fuses batting pieces together to fit a specific size, to enlarge or to reinforce, so you skip the pinning and hand-stitching that joining batting used to take.
It is a 1-1/2" cloth tape on a 15-yard roll. The fuse is soft and stretches with the batting, and it works on any batting fiber content. Beyond quilting, it can reinforce, back or patch stretch fabrics. It is 100% made in the USA.
When you are adding width to a large batt, around 93" or more, set weights on both sides of the seam to hold the pieces in place while you press. The batting may look flat right after pressing; it fluffs back up as it cools.
Specifications
| Type | Fusible cloth tape for joining batting |
|---|---|
| Fusible | Yes |
| Width x length | 1-1/2" x 15 yards |
| Color | White |
| Best for | Joining batting of any fiber content; reinforcing, backing or patching stretch fabric |
| Application | Iron setting matters most. With a Teflon-plate iron, low cotton fuses the tape. With other irons: low (synthetic) setting for 100% polyester batting; usually a wool setting for mixed synthetic battings. Use an up-and-down motion, never a sliding one, and finish with a light shot of steam with the iron held above the tape. Test on scraps first. |

Compare and choose
- Does it work on cotton, polyester and wool batting?
- Yes, it can be used on any batting fiber content. What changes is the iron setting: polyester needs a low synthetic setting, mixed synthetic battings usually do well on a wool setting, and a Teflon-plate iron can fuse on low cotton. Test on scraps of the batting you are joining.
- What iron setting should I use?
- Settings matter more than anything else with this tape. A Teflon-plate iron fuses it on low cotton. Without a Teflon plate, use a low synthetic setting for 100% polyester batting and usually a wool setting for mixed synthetic battings. Press with an up-and-down motion until the glue sets, then finish with a light shot of steam with the iron held just above the tape. Test on scraps of your batting first.
- How do I join two pieces of batting with it?
- Trim both edges straight and butt them together without overlapping. Tack the tape over the seam with an up-and-down motion of the iron, then apply heat again, adding a little light steam to fully melt the glue backing. On a large batt, such as adding width to a 93" piece, lay weights on both sides to keep the edges from drifting apart while you press.
- How many seams does a 15-yard roll join?
- Fifteen yards is 540" of tape, about five seams the length of a 108" queen batt. If you join batting on most quilts, the 100-yard roll is the bulk option. 100-yard roll
- Heat Press or a sheer polyester seam tape?
- Heat Press is a soft cloth tape that stretches with the batting. Sheer polyester tapes such as Moda MI 107 carry a permanent one-sided adhesive and are very light. Both quilt through easily; the stretch of the cloth tape is why many longarmers prefer it on large batts. Moda Fusible Seam Batting Tape
- Can I quilt through the tape?
- Yes. It is a soft, thin cloth tape that stays flexible and stretches with the batting, so it needles easily by hand or machine and does not leave a stiff ridge under your quilting.
- White or black tape?
- White suits natural, white and bleached battings. On black batting under dark quilts, use the black tape so a light line cannot shadow through at the seam. Heat Press Batting Together (Black)
