Description
HydroStick TearAway is a medium-weight non-woven tear-away embroidery stabilizer with a starch-based, water-activated adhesive coating, on a 15" x 5 yard roll. It is for items that are hard to hoop or should not be hooped: firmly woven napkins, ball caps, collar points, and bulky pieces such as heavy seam allowances.
Hoop the stabilizer with the coated side up, lightly moisten the coating, and press the item onto it. It stays securely in place while you stitch. When the design is done, remoisten the glue to release the item and tear the stabilizer away.
If you prefer a peel-and-stick paper-backed adhesive, look at StabilStick TearAway or Kimberbell Sticky-Back Tear-Away.

Compare and choose
- Water-activated vs peel-and-stick tear-away: which should I buy?
- Both hold items you cannot hoop. HydroStick uses a starch-based glue you activate with water, so there is no release paper to score and peel, and you release the item by remoistening. Peel-and-stick tear-aways such as StabilStick, Kimberbell Sticky-Back and Sulky Sticky+ have a pressure-sensitive adhesive under a paper you score and remove. Choose HydroStick for a firm hold on napkins and caps; choose peel-and-stick when you want to reposition the item before stitching. StabilStick TearAway 15" x 10 yd
- How do I use HydroStick?
- Hoop the stabilizer alone with the coated side up. Lightly dampen the coating with a damp sponge or brush, wait a moment for it to turn tacky, then press the item in place. Stitch the design, then remoisten to release the item and tear the stabilizer away.
- Will it work on knits or stretchy fabric?
- It is a tear-away, so it is meant for firmly woven items. On knits and stretchy fabrics the stitches need permanent support from a cut-away that stays in the project. Kimberbell Medium Cut-Away 12"
- Does the adhesive leave residue?
- The adhesive is starch-based and water-activated, so remoistening releases the item. Dampen only as much as needed, and on washable items any remaining starch comes out in the wash.
- Is 5 yards enough for a set of napkins?
- One hooping is used per item, and the roll is 5 yards (180") long at 15" wide, so it gives roughly 20 hoopings for a 6" x 10" hoop or about 60 for a 4" x 4" hoop. A set of napkins is well within one roll.
