Description
Pellon Fusible Cotton with Scrim is a low-loft cotton batting with a one-sided fusible coating that replaces pin basting on small projects. The 34" x 45" craft package is the right size for placemats, table runners, wall hangings, pot holders, zip pouches and quilted bag panels: press the top to the batting and go straight to quilting.
One side of the batt carries a heat-activated adhesive, so you lay the quilt top over it, press, and the layers are basted with no pins or spray. The batt itself is 93% cotton needle-punched through a 7% polypropylene scrim, the same low-loft construction as Pellon Natural Cotton with Scrim, and it holds up to hand or machine washing and dry cleaning. Pellon does not publish loft, shrinkage or stitch-spacing figures for the fusible version, so plan on cotton-like shrinkage and quilt it as you would any cotton batting.

- How do I fuse it?
- Lay the backing wrong side up, the batting fusible side up, then the quilt top right side up. Press from the top, working from the center out and lifting rather than sliding the iron, until the layers hold; follow the package insert for the heat and steam setting Pellon recommends. The bond is light and meant for basting; the quilting is what holds the quilt permanently.
- Which side is fusible?
- Only one side has adhesive. Hold the batt up to the light and look for a faint sheen or dotted texture; that is the fusible side. Put it against the layer you want to baste, usually the quilt top, and baste the backing with spray or pins.
- Craft or crib size?
- The 34" x 45" craft package handles runners, placemats and bags. For a baby quilt or anything over about 30" x 40", buy the 45" x 60" crib package. Pellon Fusible Cotton crib package
- Pellon Fusible Cotton vs Hobbs Heirloom Fusible 80/20?
- Hobbs Heirloom Fusible is an 80/20 cotton-poly blend that is fusible on both sides, so it bastes the top and backing in one pressing, and it comes in crib and queen packages and a 96" roll. Pellon Fusible Cotton is a higher-cotton batt with a scrim, fusible on one side, and sold in craft, crib and a 45" bolt. Pick Pellon for small projects and a more cotton-like hand; pick Hobbs for a full bed quilt with no pinning at all. Hobbs Heirloom Fusible 80/20 package
- Is fusible batting good for bags and placemats?
- Yes, that is where it shines. Fusing the batting to the outer fabric keeps the layers from shifting while you quilt small panels, and the scrim keeps the batt from stretching as you handle it. For bags that need to stand up on their own, use a foam stabilizer instead.
- Can I use it for a microwave bowl cozy?
- No. The adhesive and the polypropylene scrim are not microwave-safe. Use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% cotton with no scrim or adhesive. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
