Description

Pellon Fusible Cotton with Scrim is a low-loft cotton batting with a one-sided fusible coating that replaces pin basting. The 45" x 6 yard bolt gives you 216" of 45"-wide fusible batting to cut as needed: three crib-size pieces, six craft-size pieces, or a long run of placemats, runners and bag panels. It is the format for bag makers and anyone who turns out small quilted projects in quantity.

One side of the batt carries a heat-activated adhesive, so you lay the quilt top over it, press, and the layers are basted with no pins or spray. The batt itself is 93% cotton needle-punched through a 7% polypropylene scrim, the same low-loft construction as Pellon Natural Cotton with Scrim, and it holds up to hand or machine washing and dry cleaning. Pellon does not publish loft, shrinkage or stitch-spacing figures for the fusible version, so plan on cotton-like shrinkage and quilt it as you would any cotton batting.

Rolls and bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states.

~6 craft cuts
34" x 45" (45" across the width)
~30 placemats

Cut lengths run along the 216" bolt; width is fixed at 45". Craft cuts are turned so the 45" side runs across the width. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.

Compare and choose

How do I fuse it?
Lay the backing wrong side up, the batting fusible side up, then the quilt top right side up. Press from the top, working from the center out and lifting rather than sliding the iron, until the layers hold; follow the package insert for the heat and steam setting Pellon recommends. The bond is light and meant for basting; the quilting is what holds the quilt permanently.
Which side is fusible?
Only one side has adhesive. Hold the batt up to the light and look for a faint sheen or dotted texture; that is the fusible side. Put it against the layer you want to baste, usually the quilt top, and baste the backing with spray or pins.
How much does a 6 yard bolt make?
At 45" x 216" you get three 45" x 60" crib cuts, six 34" x 45" craft cuts, or about 30 placemats at 14" x 20", three across. It is only 45" wide, so twin and larger quilts need a different batting.
Bolt or packages?
One project: buy the craft or crib package, which ship anywhere. Several: the bolt costs less per yard and avoids leftover odd pieces. Bolts ship only to the 48 contiguous states. Pellon Fusible Cotton crib package
Pellon Fusible Cotton vs Hobbs Heirloom Fusible 80/20?
Hobbs Heirloom Fusible is an 80/20 cotton-poly blend that is fusible on both sides, so it bastes the top and backing in one pressing, and it comes in crib and queen packages and a 96" roll. Pellon Fusible Cotton is a higher-cotton batt with a scrim, fusible on one side, and sold in craft, crib and a 45" bolt. Pick Pellon for small projects and a more cotton-like hand; pick Hobbs for a full bed quilt with no pinning at all. Hobbs Heirloom Fusible 80/20 package
Can I use it for a microwave bowl cozy?
No. The adhesive and the polypropylene scrim are not microwave-safe. Use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, which is 100% cotton with no scrim or adhesive. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap
