Description
Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 with a fusible coating on both sides, pre-cut in Crib (45" x 60") and Queen (90" x 108") packages. Press the top to one face and the backing to the other and the whole sandwich is basted in one go: no pins, no spray, no layers creeping while you quilt. Our customers use the Crib size for mug rugs, wall hangings, bags and baby quilts, and the Queen for bed quilts on a domestic machine or longarm.
Underneath the fusing medium it is the same Heirloom 80/20: 80% cotton, 20% polyester, lightly bonded and needle-punched for strength. The fusing medium is water-soluble, so once the finished quilt is washed it rinses away and the batting ends up as soft and supple as the regular natural 80/20. Machine quilting is excellent; hand quilters should test first, since the coating stiffens the batt until it is washed.

- Which side is fusible?
- Both. The fusing medium is applied to both faces, so you can press the top to one side and the backing to the other in one setup. It is water-soluble and washes out of the finished quilt.
- How do I fuse-baste with it?
- Lay the backing wrong side up, smooth the batting over it, then the top. Press from the center outward with an iron, then flip the sandwich and press the other side. Work in sections and let each area cool before moving it. Follow the pressing instructions on the package for heat and steam.
- Fusible batting vs basting spray: which is better?
- Fusible gives a firmer, more permanent hold and the flattest sandwich, which matters for wholecloth and precisely pieced tops. Spray is quicker to reposition and fine for most everyday quilts. - Will the quilt feel stiff?
- Only until the first wash. The fusing medium is water-soluble; once laundered, the batting is as soft and supple as regular Heirloom 80/20, with the same 3-5% shrinkage and crinkle.
- Hobbs Fusible 80/20 vs Quilters Dream Fusible 80/20?
- Both are cotton/poly fusible battings in package form. Hobbs is fusible on both sides, washes out soft and comes in Crib and Queen. Quilters Dream's fusible 80/20 is their blend with a fusible finish in their package sizes. - Is fusible batting microwave-safe?
