Description
Quilters Dream Request is the thinnest of the Dream Cotton lofts: a lightweight, consistent 100% cotton batting developed for hand quilters and fine micro-stitching. It is the batting our customers choose when they want a flat, drapey quilt rather than a puffy one. It needles easily by hand, runs well on a domestic sewing machine, and works on a longarm when you float the top. This package is pre-cut in eight sizes from Craft to King, so you buy one batt sized for one project.
Dream Cotton is mechanically cleaned without chemicals, then carded, crosslapped and needle-punched. There is no scrim, resin or glue in it, which is why it keeps a soft drape and why hand and machine needles glide through it. You can quilt as closely as you like or up to 8" apart, and the construction resists shifting and lumping. Shrinkage is minimal, so do not pre-wash; machine wash and dry the finished quilt. Cotton Incorporated certifies it as 100% cotton (the black seal), and it carries a thermal value of R=3.8: warm in winter, yet it wicks moisture in summer.
Best uses are lightweight summer quilts, baby quilts, wearables, table runners and placemats, and any hand-quilted project. If you want more body and warmth from the same cotton, step up to the Select Natural Cotton package (mid loft) or the Deluxe Natural Cotton package (heavier loft).

- Is Request loft good for hand quilting?
- It is the loft Quilters Dream developed for hand quilters. The batting is thin, consistent and has no scrim or resin to resist the needle, so fine stitches and micro-stitching go through easily. It is also a good choice on a domestic machine; on a longarm, float the top rather than pinning the batting to the leaders.
- Request, Select, Deluxe or Supreme: which Dream Cotton loft do I need?
- They are the same 100% cotton at four thicknesses. Request is the thinnest, developed for hand quilters and flat, drapey quilts. Select is the mid loft and the most popular all-rounder. Deluxe is heavier, adding warmth, weight and stitch definition for machine-quilted projects. Supreme is the heaviest. All four quilt up to 8" apart and are needle-punched with no scrim.
- Natural or white: which Request cotton should I buy?
- Natural (this package) is the right choice under most fabrics. Under white or very pale tops the natural cream can shadow through, so use the Request White Cotton package for white and pastel quilts. Request White Cotton package
- Quilters Dream Cotton vs Warm & Natural: what is the difference?
- Warm & Natural is needle-punched cotton with a scrim, so it is firmer and flatter and can be quilted up to 10" apart. Dream Cotton has no scrim, resin or glue, so it drapes more softly and needles more easily by hand, with an 8" quilting distance. - Which package size fits my quilt top?
- Pick a batt at least 4" larger than your top on each side. Craft is 46" x 36", Crib 60" x 46", Throw 60" x 60", Twin 93" x 72", Double 96" x 93", Queen 108" x 93", Super Queen 121" x 93" and King 122" x 120". If you quilt often, the 60", 93" and 120" rolls cost less per yard. Request Natural Cotton 93" roll
- Do I need to pre-wash Dream Cotton?
- No. Pre-washing is not recommended. The cotton is exceptionally free of seed remnants and shrinkage is minimal, so expect a soft finish rather than the heavy crinkle of a high-shrink cotton. Machine wash and dry the finished quilt.
- Can I use this batting for microwave bowl cozies and hot pads?
- Yes, with care. Dream Cotton is 100% cotton with no scrim, resin or polyester, so it is suitable for microwave projects when you also use 100% cotton fabric and cotton thread.
