Description
Sulky Solvy is the original lightweight, clear water-soluble stabilizer. It is see-through, so you can trace a design onto it and use it as a template, pattern guide or stitch support, and it dissolves in water from 33 to 200 degrees. Use it when you do not want any stabilizer to show on the top or the back of the work.
Most embroiderers keep it as a topper: laid over towels, fleece and other napped fabrics, it keeps loops and pile from poking through, stops stitches from sinking, and sharpens fine lettering and detail. The 8" width is sized for 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" hoops and for small templates and lettering. For dense designs or as a stand-alone backing, Super Solvy is twice as thick.

Compare and choose
- Solvy vs Super Solvy vs Ultra Solvy: which do I need?
- Solvy is the lightest and is mostly used as a topper and tracing template. Super Solvy is twice as thick, heavy and strong, so it stands up to more stitching as a topper or a backing. Ultra Solvy is the firmest of the three, for freestanding lace and heavy thread work. Start with Solvy for towels and lettering. Super Solvy 8" roll
- How do I use Solvy as a topper on towels?
- Hoop the towel with a backing stabilizer, then lay a piece of Solvy over the top of the hooped area and stitch through it. The film keeps the loops from poking through and the stitches from sinking. Tear away the excess and dab or rinse off what is left.
- Tear-away vs cut-away vs wash-away: when is wash-away right?
- Tear-away is torn off stable wovens after stitching; cut-away stays in to support knits and stretch fabrics; wash-away dissolves and leaves nothing behind. Choose a wash-away like Solvy when the back of the work will show, for sheer fabrics and freestanding lace, or as a topper.
- Can I draw or trace on Solvy?
- Yes. It is see-through, so you can trace a design or quilting pattern onto it, pin or baste it to the fabric, and stitch along the lines. Rinse away the film when you are done.
- 8" or 12" roll: which width should I buy?
- The 8" width is sized for 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" hoops and for small templates and lettering. The film is the same in both widths. Solvy 12" roll
- What are the alternatives to Sulky Solvy?
- Pellon 553 Sol-U-Film Lite is a clear water-soluble film in a 12" roll that does the same topper job. Stitch2O is a textured water-soluble topping that does not stick to the presser foot. Pellon 553 Sol-U-Film Lite
