Description
Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool blends 80% fine cotton with 20% superwashed wool, cut to 96" x 108" for queen bed quilts up to about 92" x 104". Tuscany is Hobbs' premium line, and this blend is designed for hand quilting as well as home machine and longarm work.
The wool adds loft, which gives quilting greater detail, and lends drape and softness without making the batting unstable; it resists bunching and fiber migration. It is designed for medium and dark fabrics: under white or very light fabrics the unbleached cotton can slightly darken the color. Quilts made with it wash many times and get softer over time.
Hobbs suggests making a sample first to see how it needles and launders, by hand and by machine, so you get the look you want before a major project.

Compare and choose
- Tuscany Cotton Wool vs Hobbs Heirloom Wool: which should I choose?
- Heirloom Wool is 100% wool with more loft and spring, so quilting stands up in high relief. Tuscany Cotton Wool keeps cotton's weight and stability and adds 20% wool for extra loft and drape. It is the step up from 80/20 cotton/poly when you want more texture without going to all wool. Hobbs Heirloom Wool packages
- Cotton/wool vs Hobbs 80/20 cotton/poly?
- Both are about 80% cotton, shrink 3-5% and quilt up to 4" apart. The 20% wool gives more loft, a softer drape and better stitch definition than 20% polyester; the 80/20 cotton/poly is the lower-cost everyday choice. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 packages
- Will a 96" x 108" batt cover a king quilt?
- No. It covers queen tops up to about 92" x 104". For a king, use the 120" x 120" Tuscany Cotton Wool king package; longarmers who quilt this batting often can buy the 96" x 30-yard roll. Tuscany Cotton Wool king 120" x 120"
- Can I use it under a white or light quilt top?
- Test first. It is designed for medium and dark fabrics, and the unbleached cotton can slightly darken white or very light colors. For a white quilt, choose a bleached cotton such as Hobbs Tuscany 100% Bleached Cotton. Hobbs Tuscany Bleached Cotton
- How do I wash a quilt made with Tuscany Cotton Wool?
- Do not pre-wash the batting. Wash the finished quilt on a gentle machine cycle and dry it flat. Expect 3-5% shrinkage the first time, which gives a soft, lightly crinkled look; the quilt gets softer with each wash.
- Is this the same batting as the Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool roll?
- Yes. It is the same Hobbs Tuscany 80/20 cotton/wool blend, pre-cut and shipped by a distributor. We also stock it as a 96" x 30-yard roll for longarm studios; rolls ship only to the 48 contiguous states. Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool 96" roll
