OMNI by Superior Threads 6,000-yard cones

Hi Bestie,

Meet your quilting workhorse.

OMNI by Superior Threads is a 2-ply, poly-wrapped poly-core polyester thread for quilting and everyday sewing. It comes on a 6,000-yard cone, it's 40 wt., and its subtle matte finish helps your stitches blend beautifully. Strong thread, a softer-looking finish.

Why poly-wrapped poly-core?

Here's what that mouthful means. A continuous polyester filament runs down the center of the thread for strength; that's the core. Spun polyester fibers are wrapped around it; that's the wrap. The core is why OMNI rarely breaks at longarm speeds. The wrap is why it looks soft and matte instead of shiny, so the thread disappears into the quilt and the texture of the quilting shows. If you've been choosing between thread weights, Are You Using the Wrong Thread Weight? is a helpful companion.

1. Choose your color

Lay a strand across your quilt top. Match the fabric for a quiet finish, or choose contrast to highlight your quilting. Neutrals like medium gray blend across surprisingly many palettes.

2. Set up the cone

Use a compatible cone stand or machine cone holder. Let thread feed freely through the guide above the cone, then follow your machine's threading path. A cone that's dragging is a tension problem you'll never fix at the tension dial.

3. Match your needle

For home machines, Superior recommends a Topstitch 90/14 needle for OMNI. Check your machine's manual and your project's layers.

For a longarm, use the needle system and size specified by the machine maker.

4. Plan your bobbin

Superior recommends So Fine! #50 as a bobbin pairing. OMNI can also be used in the bobbin. Use the correct bobbin size and test your combination.

5. Make a test sandwich

Test sandwich quilted with feathers to check tension on both sides

Use scraps of your quilt top, batting and backing. Stitch straight lines and curves at your usual pace.

Check both sides. Adjust tension in small steps, one setting at a time, until the stitches balance within the layers. We go deeper on this in Stop Fighting Your Thread Tension, and on the mistake to avoid in The Tension Fix That Creates Another Problem.

6. Quilt at your pace

Keep a steady rhythm. Retest when you change thread, needle or quilt layers. Save your successful settings for next time.

Quick fixes before frustration

Thread breaking? Rethread, check for snags, and replace a worn or damaged needle.

Loops or uneven stitches? Check threading and bobbin seating before changing tension.

Keep the bobbin area clean and follow your machine's manual. If stitches are skipping, Skipped Stitches Start Right Here.

Put OMNI to work

Try all-over quilting, longarm quilting, bag making and everyday sewing. Match the thread, needle and stitch to the project. Choose what you need. Create at your pace.

Happy Quilting!
From Corey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OMNI thread?

OMNI by Superior Threads is a 40 wt., 2-ply, poly-wrapped poly-core polyester thread with a subtle matte finish. It is sold on 6,000-yard cones and is a go-to for longarm quilting, everyday sewing and bag making. The core gives it strength; the wrap gives it a soft, cotton-like look. See the OMNI Natural White guide for a closer look.

What needle should I use with OMNI thread?

For home machines, Superior recommends a Topstitch 90/14 needle. Its large eye and deep groove protect 40 wt. thread from shredding. For a longarm, use the needle system and size specified by the machine maker, usually a size 18 (110) or 16 (100). What Do Those Needle Numbers Actually Mean? decodes the sizes.

What bobbin thread goes with OMNI?

Superior recommends So Fine! #50 as a bobbin pairing because the finer thread reduces bulk on the back and makes tension easier to balance. OMNI can also be used in the bobbin if you want identical thread on both sides. Either way, use the correct bobbin size for your machine and test the combination. Browse OMNI cones.

Why does my thread keep breaking?

The usual causes are a worn or damaged needle, a snag somewhere in the thread path, or a cone that cannot feed freely. Rethread completely, check for burrs on the needle plate and thread guides, and replace the needle before touching tension. Before You Rethread Your Machine has a quick checklist.

Is OMNI thread good for longarm quilting?

Yes. OMNI was designed for longarms: the polyester core resists the high speeds and tension of a longarm, the matte finish blends into most fabrics, and 6,000-yard cones mean fewer changes mid-quilt. Many longarmers run OMNI on top with So Fine! or OMNI in the bobbin.
