Description
This is a medium-weight, white, non-woven tear-away embroidery stabilizer for woven fabrics, including dark wovens. It supports medium to high stitch count designs and removes cleanly and easily once stitching is done. It is sew-in: hoop it under the fabric, stitch, then tear the excess away.
The 20" x 10 yard roll is the efficient width for 8" x 12" and larger hoops, and for cutting smaller hoopings two across. If you only use a 4" x 4" or 5" x 7" hoop, the 10" roll is the smaller commitment.
For knits or anything that stretches, a tear-away will not hold the design after wear; use a cut-away such as PolyMesh instead. For collars, napkin corners and other hard-to-hoop pieces, StabilStick TearAway has a light adhesive coating that holds the fabric without hooping it.

Cuts are the hoop size plus about 2" each way, laid along the 10-yard length at the 20" width and turned where that fits more. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.
Compare and choose
- Which width roll should I buy?
- Buy for your largest hoop with about 2" of margin on every side. The 10" roll fits 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" hoops and a 6" x 10" turned lengthwise; the 15" roll fits up to 8" x 12"; the 20" roll is best for large hoops and cuts smaller hoopings two across. The stabilizer is identical across widths. 15" x 10 yd roll
- Tear-away, cut-away or wash-away: which do I need?
- Tear-away (this roll) is for stable wovens where you want the back clean after stitching. Cut-away stays in the project and is trimmed with scissors; use it on knits, sweatshirts and anything stretchy. Wash-away dissolves in water and is for freestanding lace, sheers and projects where no stabilizer can show. If the fabric stretches, do not use tear-away.
- Is medium weight enough for a dense design?
- Medium weight is rated for medium to high stitch counts on wovens. For very dense designs, large fill areas or soft fabrics, hoop two layers, or step up to a heavy tear-away such as Kimberbell Heavy Tear-Away. Kimberbell Heavy Tear-Away 20" roll
- Will white stabilizer show on dark fabric?
- It is torn away after stitching, so on a woven only a little stays trapped under the stitches on the back. That is why it works on dark wovens. If you need a backing that stays in a dark garment, use a black cut-away such as PolyMesh Black so nothing shows through. PolyMesh Black 15" x 10 yd
- How do I tear it away without distorting the stitches?
- Hold the stitching flat and tear toward the design in small sections, especially around curves and lettering. Do not pull the fabric. Small bits left inside tight areas can stay on the back.
