Description
Ultra Clean and Tear is a medium weight tear-away embroidery stabilizer from OESD. It gives firm support for medium to high stitch count designs on woven fabrics, including towels, when no permanent backing is wanted, and it tears away easily after stitching.
The 15" width covers larger hoops up to about 8" x 12" and multi-hooping on bigger pieces. The same stabilizer comes as Ultra Clean and Tear Fusible (iron-on) and Ultra Clean and Tear Plus (water-activated adhesive for hard-to-hoop items).

Compare and choose
- Ultra Clean and Tear, Fusible or Plus: which do I need?
- Plain Ultra Clean and Tear is hooped with the fabric. The Fusible version irons onto woven fabric first, which stops shifting on larger designs. The Plus version has a water-soluble adhesive coating so you can stick down collars, napkin corners and towels that are hard to hoop, and it washes away as well as tearing. Ultra Clean and Tear Plus 10"
- Is Ultra Clean and Tear good for towels?
- Yes. OESD recommends it for wovens including towels when you do not want a permanent backing. Add a water-soluble topping on top so stitches do not sink into the terry loops. Wash-Away Topping 12" x 10 yd
- 10" or 15" width: which should I buy?
- Buy the width that leaves about 1" of stabilizer beyond the hoop on every side. The 10" roll covers hoops up to 6" x 10"; the 15" roll covers hoops up to about 8" x 12". 10" x 10 yd roll
- Tear-away, cut-away or wash-away: which stabilizer do I need?
- Tear-away is for stable woven fabrics where no backing should stay behind: it supports the stitching, then tears off. Cut-away stays in the project permanently and is the right choice for knits, sweatshirts and anything that stretches, because the stitches need support through every wash. Wash-away dissolves in water and is for freestanding lace, sheers and projects where no trace of stabilizer can remain. See a cut-away option
- Can I use it on knits?
- It is made for woven fabrics. Knits need a stabilizer that stays in, such as a cut-away or PolyMesh, so the design keeps its shape after washing. PolyMesh 15" x 10 yd
