What is hair canvas, and when do I need it?

Hair canvas is the traditional tailoring interfacing: a springy woven blend that includes real horse hair. It is used in jacket and coat fronts, lapels, under-collars and chest pieces to give crisp detail and firm control that lasts through wear and cleaning. If you are making a structured blazer or wool coat, this is the interfacing; for a soft, unlined jacket you want something lighter.

Fusible hair canvas vs Tailor's Elite 855F?

Tailor's Elite is Pellon's lighter fusible tailoring interfacing for suiting and jackets that want softer shaping. Hair canvas HC120F is firmer and springier, for medium to heavyweight coatings where you want a defined roll line and a lapel that holds its shape. Many tailors use both in one coat: hair canvas in the front and Tailor's Elite in the facings.

Which fabrics should I not use it on?

Pellon says not to use it on triacetate, seersucker, lace or rainwear fabric. Heat-sensitive and textured fabrics can be damaged or flattened by fusing a heavy canvas; for those, a sew-in interfacing is the safer route.

Is there a sew-in version?

We stock the fusible version only. If you prefer to pad-stitch or baste your canvas by hand, or your fabric cannot be fused, the heavy woven SF785 is a sew-in alternative for shirts and jackets, though it does not have the spring of hair canvas.

Does the natural color show through?

Rarely. Hair canvas goes inside coat-weight fabric and is covered by the facing, so the natural color is not visible. Under a very light, thin fabric any interfacing can shadow; hair canvas is not the right weight for those fabrics anyway.

Cut the canvas on the same grain as the garment piece, trim it out of the seam allowances to reduce bulk, and fuse with a press cloth using firm pressure and the settings on the bolt end, working in sections and letting each cool before moving it. Always test on a scrap of your coating first.

Pellon HC120F Fusible Hair Canvas is a woven, fusible tailoring interfacing on a 21" x 10-yard bolt. It is the product for jackets and coats in medium to heavyweight fabrics when you want crisp detail and firm control: coat fronts, lapels, collars, chest pieces and hems that hold a tailored line. The blend of rayon, cotton, polyester, horse hair and wool gives it the spring of a traditional sew-in canvas with the convenience of fusing.
