SF785 vs SF101 Shape-Flex: what is the difference?

Both are woven interfacings, but SF101 is a light-to-medium 100% cotton fusible and SF785 is a heavyweight cotton/polyester sew-in. Use SF101 for collars, cuffs and bags where you want crispness that still folds. Use SF785 when the fabric is medium to heavy, when you want more body, or when the fabric cannot be fused.

When is sew-in better than fusible interfacing?

When the fabric is sensitive to heat or steam, when it has a nap, texture or coating that fusing would flatten, when it is loosely woven and adhesive dots would show, and when you want the fabric to keep its own hand. Sew-in also cannot bubble or release after washing.

Can SF785 be used as a stand-alone fabric?

Yes. Pellon notes that it is firm enough to function as a fabric on its own, which is why tie makers and bag makers use it for interlinings, belts, tabs and stiffened panels.

SF785 vs Pellon 40 Sew-In Midweight?

Pellon 40 is a non-woven sew-in stabilizer: no grain, cut any direction, a bit papery. SF785 is a woven, so it drapes with the fabric and feels like cloth. For garments and ties choose SF785; for craft panels where grain does not matter, Pellon 40 is cheaper.

Cut it on the same grain as the garment piece, baste it to the wrong side of the fabric just inside the seam allowance, then construct as one layer. Trim the interfacing from the seam allowances after stitching to cut bulk at collar points and corners.

For shirt collars, cuffs, plackets, tie interlinings and jacket facings, yes. If you need to interface a full jacket front wider than 20", piece two cuts with a flat zigzag or lapped seam.

Pellon SF785 Woven Sew-In is an all-purpose heavyweight woven interfacing for medium to heavy-weight fabrics, on a 20" x 10-yard bolt. It adds body and crispness to shirts, jackets and ties without any adhesive, so it suits fabrics that cannot take a hot iron and sewists who prefer the hand of a sewn-in layer. It is a 55% cotton / 45% polyester weave firm enough to work as a stand-alone fabric for ties, belts and structured pieces.
